Field Supervisor

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Field Supervisor ensures the safe and efficient daily operation of the district's fleet. This role provides on-site leadership through route monitoring, safety audits, and emergency incident response. By evaluating driver performance, investigating accidents, and resolving field-level conflicts with parents and school staff, the Field Supervisor bridges the gap between department policy and real-world execution to ensure student safety.

This job reports to the Assistant Director of Transportation

Conducts random and scheduled field observations of bus routes to ensure drivers are adhering to designated paths, time schedules, and safety protocols.

Evaluates the safety of existing and proposed bus stops, identifying hazards (e.g., sightline obstructions, high-traffic risks) and recommending adjustments to the Routing Department.

Coordinates with Dispatch during peak hours to reroute buses due to road closures, reassigns routes as needed to provide full coverage when short-staffed, mechanical breakdowns, or weather-related delays.

Acts as the primary District responder to all school bus accidents, student injuries, or major mechanical failures occurring in the field.

Performs initial accident investigations, including taking photos, gathering witness statements, and conducting "post-accident" drug and alcohol testing coordination.

Serves as the District's point of contact for police, fire, and EMS at the scene of an incident to ensure student safety and rapid information flow to the Director.

Conducts formal performance evaluations of drivers and aides in the field, focusing on student management, defensive driving, and professional conduct.

Delivers "on-the-spot" coaching or formal disciplinary recommendations when safety violations or policy infractions are observed.

Intervenes in high-conflict situations at bus stops involving disgruntled parents, motorists, or difficult student behavior that exceeds a driver's capacity to manage.

Performs unannounced inspections of buses to ensure drivers are completing required pre-trip and post-trip safety checks (e.g., checking for sleeping children, fluid leaks, or tire wear).

Monitors the condition of the fleet in the field and reports recurring maintenance issues or interior cleanliness problems to the Shop Foreman.

Meets regularly with School Principals to coordinate loading zone procedures and address student discipline issues occurring on the bus.

Investigates and resolves public complaints about driver behavior or traffic safety concerns.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities are required to perform multiple technical tasks, with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; using pertinent software applications; operating heavy and light-duty vehicles; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safe driving practices; provisions of the motor vehicle code and the education code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students; state licensing requirements; methods of instruction related to in-service training.

Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; effective communication skills; maintaining a good rapport with employees, community and students.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 25% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Minimum 2 years experience working in a Transportation department required; Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

High school diploma or equivalent.
