Surgical TechnologistThe surgical technologist works under the direct supervision of an RN in the operating room environment. Must possess strong clinical knowledge and skills regarding operating room procedures. Must be highly motivated and self-directed with a positive attitude and good communication skills. Willingness to have flexible work schedules and duties, which will include ancillary tasks such as cleaning rooms between cases, stocking rooms, and assisting in the central sterile area. Must have a proven record of expediting room turnover. Good organizational skills and an understanding of the importance of teamwork in a fast-paced environment are essential. The surgical technologist will be responsible for ensuring patient safety and preventing acquired physical injuries. This includes actively participating in the time-out procedure and labeling all solutions and medications with the name and strength of the drug before it is transferred to the sterile field. Counts must be conducted according to policy without deviations, except in emergency situations. The technologist must follow policies for the safe handling of specimens, implants, and explants. It is important to check packaging or containers for integrity to promote aseptic technique. The role requires displaying knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation. The technologist should be scrubbed and in the room before the patient enters. Efficient setup for the procedure is required, along with knowledge of sutures and supplies appropriate for the procedure. The sterile field must be maintained and protected during the procedure. Knowledge of sterile techniques must be demonstrated through actions. The surgical technologist contributes to the department and the entire operating room team by taking personal responsibility and accountability. Practicing safe working habits by following policies on the safe use of safety items is essential. Effective communication with team members is required. Following the chain of command must be adhered to. It is important to correct problems on the spot when it is in the best interest of the patient and within one's control to correct. The technologist must complete required assignments and competencies on time and be willing to precept and assist peers and students when needed. Returning the room to a ready state at the end of the case and utilizing free time to help others is expected. Reporting to the control desk if not assigned and asking for direction is necessary. Assistance with cleaning and stocking the room is required. Additionally, the technologist will deliver care in a manner that impacts the entire healthcare environment. This includes opening sutures and supplies on an as-needed basis. Practicing good care of instruments and equipment by using appropriate cleaning methods is necessary. Any broken or unusable instruments or equipment must be reported to the nurse leader. Reporting any changes in resource maps to the nurse leader is also required.
