The position requires extensive walking, driving within the service territory, and working outdoors in all weather conditions while maintaining a professional demeanor in customers’ homes.
Responsibilities
Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters to identify corrosion, damage, and potential safety concerns.
Enter customers’ homes and properties in a professional manner to access and inspect gas meters and related equipment.
Document all inspection findings accurately and completely in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
Complete all necessary paperwork and electronic documentation using a handheld tablet and field binder.
Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining accurate records and following established procedures.
Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, as directed.
Perform audit reviews with operations teams and provide support during internal and external audits.
Follow established safety procedures and guidelines during all field activities and tailboard meetings.
Communicate clearly with customers to explain the purpose of the visit and inspection process.
Collaborate with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed.
Attend and complete required classroom and field training, including homework, practice exams, and certification testing.
Demonstrate competency in performing inspections independently after training, including proper use of tools and equipment.
Maintain reliability and professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, and proper communication regarding sick time and schedule changes.
Use company-provided tools and safety equipment properly, including gas detectors, flashlights, field binders, and personal protective equipment.
Adhere to standard operating hours and, when requested and agreed, work occasional Saturday shifts.
Essential Skills
Possess a valid state driver’s license, with the ability to use or move company vehicles when required.
Own or have access to a reliable vehicle to travel to and within the service territory.
Demonstrate strong professionalism and customer service skills when entering and working in customers’ homes.
Communicate clearly and effectively, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Exhibit a basic to intermediate level of mechanical aptitude, such as experience or exposure in cable technology, HVAC, piping, or automotive work, recognizing that this is an entry-level role.
Be able to walk, climb stairs, and use ladders throughout an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions.
Remain on your feet for most of the day and walk several miles per day as part of normal job duties.
Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
Demonstrate basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Show strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage daily routes, documentation, and deadlines.
Work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra to support inspection and documentation tasks.
Show strong interpersonal skills and initiative, including proactive problem-solving and follow-through.
Maintain a consistent job history that reflects reliability and professionalism.
Be customer service oriented and comfortable interacting with a wide range of individuals in the field.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience in a mechanically inclined role, such as cable technician, HVAC, piping, or automotive mechanic, is beneficial.
Previous field inspection or technician experience is an advantage.
Experience using handheld tablets or mobile devices for work-related tasks is helpful.
Familiarity with regulatory or audit processes in a utility or industrial setting is a plus.
Comfort working in a highly structured training and certification environment, including completing homework and practice exams outside of class time.
Ability to adapt to changing routes, schedules, and priorities within the service territory.
Strong attention to detail when performing inspections and completing documentation.
Comfort interfacing with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other external stakeholders.
Why Work Here?
This role contributes directly to a major safety initiative designed to protect the public by helping prevent future gas leaks and explosions, offering a strong sense of purpose and community impact. The organization provides a structured multi-year program with significant growth opportunities in a large metropolitan area, including potential advancement into larger programs and long-term deployment initiatives. Team members benefit from clear training paths, certification opportunities, and a culture that values safety, reliability, and upward mobility. The work offers stable, ongoing demand due to recurring inspection requirements, creating a foundation for long-term career development.
Work Environment
This is a 100% field-based position within a utility service territory primarily covering Brooklyn and Queens. Inspection Technicians travel daily using their own vehicles to report to job sites, typically starting the day by receiving a list of addresses and route information on a handheld tablet. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the technician’s discretion. The role involves extensive walking, stair climbing, and ladder use, as well as working outdoors in all weather conditions and entering customers’ homes. Tailboard meetings occur at warehouse locations in Queens or Brooklyn. The work environment is structured around safety and compliance, with an intensive initial training program that includes an OSHA-focused orientation, classroom instruction, homework and practice exams, certification testing, and a probationary period during the first 90 days to assess performance and competency. After passing exams, technicians job shadow in the field before working independently. The company provides all necessary tools and safety equipment, including a simple tool set, flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. Communication with supervisors regarding attendance and scheduling is expected to be timely and professional.
