Substitute Therapeutic Intervention Coach – SPED Portland, OR - Portland Public Schools, Multnomah County | $25.09 / Hour Position Summary The Therapeutic Intervention Coach supports K–12 students with emotional, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities in SPED settings. This role provides behavioral and academic intervention, including verbal and physical de‑escalation, data tracking, and staff support. The coach serves as a lead responder during physical intervention situations and promotes safe, positive learning environments. Key Responsibilities Support teachers and staff with student behavior and academic interventions. Provide individual and small group coaching to help students regulate and reintegrate into classrooms. Support students with special needs by following provisions specified in their IEPs/504 Plans. Maintain and staff sensory or de‑escalation rooms where physical interventions may occur. Collect, document, chart, and summarize behavioral and academic data. Must collaborate with Special Education staff, Student Management Specialists, and mental health professionals on behavior and safety plans. Participate in and apply training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and other de‑escalation methods. Uphold district equity policies and participate in related professional development. Perform other duties as assigned by administration. Qualifications Two years of college coursework to meet ESSA requirements or passing score on a Para Professional exam required. Preferred three years’ related experience in special education or mental health settings (education, training, or experience may substitute). Strong teamwork, communication, and data documentation skills. Ability to remain calm and professional during crises. Must complete NCI certification upon hire. Bachelor’s degree and therapeutic intervention experience preferred. Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform frequent physical movement (bending, restraining, kneeling).
