CVOR Surgical Technologist

Position Summary Primary City/State: Mesa, Arizona. Department Name: Open Heart Surg-Hosp. Work Shift: Day. Job Category: Clinical Care. Full-time, 32 hours per week (6:30am‑3pm, Monday‑Friday with varied days off). On Call: Nights, weekends, and holidays. The Banner Desert Medical Center/Banner Children’s at Desert Main Surgery Department includes 24 operating rooms ranging from trauma and pediatric to cysto, minimally invasive, robotic, and cardiovascular suites. The department performed over 21,000 surgeries in 2017. Position Summary: This role selects and places surgical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgery, scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies. The candidate will support training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students as assigned, and will be proficient to scrub on a minimum of two surgical specialties. The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist assists the physician with advanced tasks during procedures, including cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access. Core Functions Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies, ensuring instruments are in good working order, reviewing case carts for correct items, troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment, and calling biomedical staff as needed. Checks the schedule and plans for upcoming cases. Anticipates the surgeon’s needs by passing instruments and retracting tissue, maintaining competency to scrub in at least two surgical specialties. Demonstrates aseptic technique and universal precautions, disposes of sharps and trash, places used supplies into the case cart for processing, and participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate. Assists with operating‑room turnover between cases, participates in stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning the OR. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students as assigned. Provides business support to the department, including administrative tasks. Follows safety procedures for medication labeling, specimen and sharps handling, time‑out procedures, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and instrument assembly/disassembly. Participates in emergency call rotation. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED and current Basic Life Support certification. Certification as a surgical technologist. One to two years of experience as a surgical technologist, or three to four years, with the ability to scrub proficiently on at least two surgical specialties. Registration with the State Regulatory Agency, where applicable. Manual dexterity, professionalism, and composure in high‑stress emergent situations. Ability to remain organized, quick to respond to surgeon and patient needs, and to stay abreast of new developments in the field. Preferred Qualifications Additional related education and/or experience.
