The Indigenous Education Student Support Specialist collaborates with community agencies, organizations, and Anchorage School District interdisciplinary teams to maximize educational opportunities for Alaska Native and American Indian students and families. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Job Requirements

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment. Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. The following are required:
- A bachelor's degree in social work or related field. Equivalent experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
- Experience in working with Alaska Native and American Indian community, knowledge of Alaska Native community, knowledge of Alaska Native traditions, values and belief systems.
- Must be self-motivated, organized and reliable.
- Ability to develop and coordinate meetings, activities, workshops, and presentations.
- Ability to provide personal transportation.
- Proficiency to compile and summarize data in a spreadsheet, database and word processing formats.
- Four years' experience working with Alaska Native and American Indian youth and families within an educational setting preferred.
- Ability to network with professionals involved in post-secondary education and employment agencies.
- Ability to communicate with all levels of management, supervision, and other Anchorage School District personnel.
- Knowledge of Anchorage community resources and services to Alaska Native and American Indian people in Anchorage.
- Implements and maintains services in accordance with the Title VI Indian Education Federal objectives and Anchorage School District initiatives.
- Consults and collaborates with community agencies, organizations, and Anchorage School district interdisciplinary teams to maximize educational opportunities for students and families.
- Assists Alaska Native and American Indian middle and high school students with academic guidance and resources.
- Assists families and students in transition from rural to urban Alaska.
- Maintains consistent effective written and oral communication with students, parents/guardians, teachers, school administration, and members of the community.
- Connects students to post-secondary resources.
- Evaluates student records and assists with developing and implementing services that address social, academic and cultural needs.
- Monitors grades, attendance, and credits regularly and consults and collaborates with teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians.
- Collects and enters data required by Indian Education and the Anchorage School District.
