CARE Counselor - Morning Shift

Under the direction and supervision of the CARE Site Director and Youth Recreation Supervisor, the Morning Shift, or "AM" CARE Counselor is responsible for the direct supervision of program participants and the planning and implementation of age-appropriate activities. Counselors are expected to lead children in a variety of recreation activities and to provide a safe and enjoyable experience to all participants. Gurnee Park District currently is looking for morning shift team members only, with a typical shift being around 7:00am to 9:00am.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESResponsible for the direct supervision and safety of the childrenKnow the location of the participants at all timesResponsible for the leadership of all scheduled CARE activities and eventsParticipate in planning activities for the participantsTeach, instruct and run activities for the participantsEncourage individuals to participate in-group activitiesWork with other staff members as a teamAct as a role model for young childrenProvide customer service and friendliness to all participants and parentsProvide a safe and enjoyable environment for participantsGreet the children by name and parents on a daily basisReport any problems to the Site DirectorCommunicate information, as needed, to staff members and patronsMaintain an approachable appearance and be friendly to participants and parentsAttend all staff meetings and trainingsArrive on time as scheduled and dressed appropriately for workWork a minimum of five Days Off ProgramsAssist with set up and cleanupADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESHelp and supervise the work of VolunteersBe knowledgeable of phone locations and the telephone numbers for the police, fire, and paramedicsPerform related work as required by Youth Program Coordinator, Youth Recreation Supervisor and/or the Site DirectorKeep records as required by the Park DistrictWork Parents Night Out Program as neededWe believe in taking care of our team and supporting our members both professionally and personally. Check out our offerings here.QUALIFICATIONSExperience: Individuals 16 years or older who have experience working with childrenEducation: A basic knowledge of children's needs as they relate to a before/after school program settingSkills: Knowledge of age characteristics and appropriate activities for children, ability to lead, participate and organize children in a variety of recreation activities; maturity, good judgment and leadership abilityCertifications: CPR, First Aid and AED certification is required or willingness to obtain within six weeksCompetencies: The ability to learn new skills and lead activities in an indoor/outdoor based recreational setting. Ability to work with others.PHYSICAL DEMANDSYour job may entail climbing, running, crawling, bending, kneeling, and sitting when working/playing with children.
