Shape Critical Components as a Precision Manual Lathe & Boring Mill Machinist

Location: Moody, AL (On-site)

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

A day in this role

Start your shift setting up large Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump components, dialing in your Vertical and Horizontal Lathes, and reviewing prints for critical dimensions. You’ll select cutting tools, set speeds and feeds to achieve the right surface finish, and hold ultra-tight tolerances—down to 0.0005" when required. Throughout the day, you’ll rig and move heavy parts using overhead cranes and forklifts, follow EH&S and QMS procedures, and collaborate with a team that takes pride in rebuilding large Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps and compressors to exacting standards. Occasional overtime during the week—and some weekends—helps us meet customer deadlines.

What you’ll handle

• Set up and operate large Vertical & Horizontal Lathes to repair and overhaul large Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps & Compressors.
• Interpret blueprints/drawings ; measure with micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, and other precision instruments.
• Maintain precise tolerances, at times as tight as 0.0005".
• Select appropriate tools for a range of metals; determine speeds/feeds to achieve proper finishes.
• Operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely within a machine shop environment; adhere to all company EH&S and QMS processes.
• Lift/rig heavy components; assist with disassembly, reassembly, repair, and rebuilding of large Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps.
• Work overtime as needed during the week and occasionally on weekends.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated proficiency with machine setup, controls, and machine capabilities.
• 3+ years as a machine operator/machinist.
• 2+ years reading and interpreting blueprints.
• 1+ year experience on king-style boring mills (or VTLs).
• Skilled with depth, bore, and height gauges; feeler gauges; micrometers; calipers; deburring tools; die grinders; drill presses; and overhead lifting equipment.

Core strengths

• Ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines.
• Fluency converting between metric and US measurement units.
• Comfort solving problems with multiple variables using standard methods (e.g., 5 Whys).
• Clear communicator in one-on-one and small-group settings with supervisors, customers, clients, and peers.

Preferred

• HS Diploma or GED preferred; advanced education or certifications are a plus.
• Hands-on experience with manual VTLs, boring mills, and horizontal lathes (Cincinnati and King brands a plus).
• Track record of setting up and running manual machines, including tool changes and in-process offset adjustments.

Work arrangement

• 100% on-site at our Moody, AL facility.
