Police Officer - Trainee

Job Summary Police Officer Trainee hired as a non-sworn civilian for academy training at $44.44 per hour with benefits. Upon graduation and swearing in, the trainee becomes a sworn Police Officer with an annual starting salary of $126,894.64 plus benefits. Application Requirements Applicants must complete the POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written test and the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) physical agility test. A passing score of 50 or higher on PELLETB and 320 or higher on WSTB, each dated within the last six months, is required. Responsibilities Under direction, patrol an assigned area by vehicle, foot, or as directed. Maintain law and order, respond to emergencies, conduct investigations of complaints, crime reports, traffic accidents, administer first aid, make arrests, serve subpoenas and warrants, guard prisoners, question suspects, and provide information to the public regarding laws, ordinances, traffic safety, and public services. Operate radio and other communication equipment, protect life and property, preserve constitutional rights, and write accurate reports. Preserve effective relationships with other law enforcement agencies and the community. Supervision Received: direction from a Police Sergeant or a higher sworn management position. Exercised: may provide direction to Police Cadets, Community Service Specialists, Reserve Police Officers, volunteers, and other temporary employees. Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent. Desirable college courses related to law enforcement. Experience in a police program or department is desirable. Valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Minimum age 21. Skills and Knowledge Basic English, mathematics, effective communication, public speaking, problem solving, interpersonal relations. Computer operating systems and software applications. Ability to read, understand, enforce laws and regulations, and follow oral and written directions. Good judgment in emergency situations, ability to observe and recall details, and write at a fast rate. Compliance with California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Code of Ethics. Physical and Mental Requirements Lift, drag, and transport objects/individuals up to 150 pounds. Vision: no less than 20/100 uncorrected in either eye and 20/30 corrected in either eye. Hear and speak well enough to communicate over telephone, radio, and in person up to 50 feet. Use of hands, fingers to write, operate equipment, drive a vehicle, discharge weapons, operate computer. Sit or stand for long periods. Other physical requirements as per P.O.S.T. Medical Screening Manual. Other Requirements Willingness to work any shift, including holidays, weekends, overtime, and emergency calls. Work under hazardous conditions with safety precautions. Attend training during work and non‑work hours. Wear uniform and comply with grooming standards.
