At Retrospect Labs, we specialise in designing and delivering world-class cyber security exercises that help organisations build real resilience. We're looking for a Senior Cyber Security Consultant to lead highly technical engagements, design realistic scenarios, facilitate sessions with everyone from technical teams to executives, and help shape the future of our exercise capability.

This is a senior, client-facing role for someone who can operate independently, lead with confidence, and bring strong technical judgement to complex cyber security engagements.

What You'll Do

• Lead and directly deliver the end-to-end delivery of highly technical cyber security-related engagements:
• Gather client requirements and understand operating environments, translating these into actionable exercise plans.
• Design realistic adversary backstories and scenarios aligned to modern and emerging threat actor tradecraft.
• Build technical artefacts, such as digital forensics datasets, memory dumps, logs, and packet captures to simulate real-world incident scenarios.
• Facilitate exercises for diverse stakeholders (technical teams, executives, boards).
• Produce high-quality post-delivery reports with clear, actionable insights and recommendations.
• Lead or support other engagements from time to time, such as conferences, training sessions, and competition events, demonstrating technical leadership and industry expertise.
• Leverage Gauntlet (our cyber security exercise platform) as the core delivery mechanism for engagements.
• Collaborate closely with customers to execute controlled activities within their environments to simulate malicious tradecraft that is aligned to the scenario, for the successful delivery of functional (live play) exercises.
• Provide hands-on technical expertise during technical incident response components of exercises and focus heavily on driving value to participants in technical roles.
• Mentor and train junior staff on technical skills, including forensics, incident response methodologies, and practical application in exercises.
• Assist in the creation, review, or technical refinement of scenarios for use in engagements, continually updating Retrospect Labs template content to align with emerging cyber incidents.
• Engage with technical and cyber security communities to champion the value of exercises, and promote our mission at Retrospect Labs.

What You'll Need

• Significant hands-on experience in performing incident response activities and experience in technical roles (e.g., digital forensics, security operations, penetration testing, or threat hunting).
• Proven specialisation in technical cyber-related disciplines, including digital forensics, memory analysis, malware investigation, or technical incident management.
• A deep understanding of cyber incidents, their origins, impacts, appropriate mitigation strategies, and technical investigation techniques.
• Comprehensive knowledge of industry-accepted cyber security frameworks and standards, including MITRE ATT&CK, NIST, and ACSC publications (e.g. Essential 8, CI Fortify).
• Awareness of the cyber security regulatory environment in Australia and obligations organisations may have.
• Strong judgment and the ability to operate independently in a client-facing consulting environment.
• Strong public speaking skills – confidence in presenting to large groups, delivering technical insights, and facilitating complex exercises.
• Strong facilitation skills, including the ability to respond accurately and confidently in real-time to participant input, and to actively guide discussions to drive participation and ensure key issues are explored.
• Exceptional technical writing abilities – capable of producing clear, concise documentation tailored for various audiences (e.g. technical reports, executive summaries).
• Experience in working independently without heavy direction or frequent check-ins (a "Manager of one" - understanding what needs to be done, breaking down the tasks, and then executing).
• Flexibility to travel for delivering onsite exercises and engaging in relevant industry events.
• Experience designing or facilitating cyber security exercises or simulations is highly regarded.
