What You’ll Do

Located on a 2,000-acre site in the redwoods of Mendocino County, Camp Mendocino serves over 1,400 youth annually through transformative summer camp experiences, while operating year-round for school groups, youth-serving organizations, corporate retreats, weddings, and community gatherings. Reporting to the Executive Director and functioning under the senior leadership team of BGCSF, the Camp Director drives staff culture, youth recruitment and enrollment strategy, rental group recruitment and execution, marketing communications, customer service, and budget management. This role provides daily leadership to 90+ seasonal employees during the summer. The position resides on-site in Mendocino County from June through August; from September through May, the role travels to Mendocino but is largely based in San Francisco with a hybrid schedule that includes one remote work day per week. A valid CA driver's license and ability to travel regularly between San Francisco and Mendocino is required.

• Staff Culture & Supervision (30%)
  
  
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise 90+ seasonal employees for summer operations, driving a culture centered on safety, inclusion, trauma-informed practices, and professional growth.
  • Mentor extended-season and year-round leadership staff.
• Youth Recruitment, Marketing & Program Strategy (25%)
  
  
  • Drive overarching camper recruitment, external marketing, and outreach strategies to achieve an annual goal of 2,000 youth served (1,200 summer campers and 800+ via school groups and family programs).
  • Oversee enrollment systems, family communications, and participant retention to maximize session capacities.
• Customer Service & Off-Season Growth (20%)
  
  
  • Champion off-season site utilization by marketing to, recruiting, and hosting third-party rental groups (retreats, weddings, school trips).
  • Deliver exceptional, high-touch customer service and client relations to build brand loyalty and secure repeat bookings.
• Fiscal Ownership & Operational Collaboration (15%)
  
  
  • Maintain direct ownership of Camp’s annual operating budget, making sound, data-driven financial decisions to maximize fiscal health.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Director on facility logistics, systems, and infrastructure project planning.
• Compliance, Safety & Data-Driven Outcomes (10%)
  
  
  • Maintain ACA accreditation and state health regulations while evaluating trauma-informed practices and program outcome data to drive continuous operational improvement, inform decision-making, and ensure a high-quality youth experience.

What You Bring

Required

• 8+ years of leadership/management experience in youth development and overnight camp management
• Experience serving youth from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities utilizing trauma-informed practices and positive youth development
• Proven success assembling, training, and supervising large teams (75+ seasonal staff)
• Proven track record of effective financial management, including both cost management and revenue management
• Experience with ACA accreditation, safety protocols, and emergency-response planning
• Bachelor’s degree or significant relative work experience
• Ability to live on-site during the summer season (at least 12 weeks)
• Valid driver’s license (Class B preferred) and the ability and willingness to drive long distances, including on dirt roads
• Experience and significant comfort working in Google Suite and database systems

Preferred

• Experience supervising a health center or medical services
• Experience overseeing a commercial kitchen operation
• Familiarity with facility maintenance and hospitality services
• Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Bilingual fluency in Spanish

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for at least 2 hours consecutively.
• Must be able to sit at a computer workstation for long periods of time.

Compensation

The hiring range for this position is $97,000 to $110,000 annually. Final compensation is determined based on a range of factors, including skill set, experience, training, certifications, and organizational needs. Candidates may be hired at the entry, mid, or senior level of the range, depending on qualifications and position requirements.

Pre-Employment Requirements

As part of the hiring process, BGCSF requires candidates to complete LiveScan fingerprinting, a background check, and a tuberculosis (TB) evaluation or test.
