Wildlife Biologist 2 (Assistant Area Biologist - PCN 112060) Open to Alaska Residents only. Eligibility to be determined by reviewing the residency definition. Job Description What you will be doing: The position operates under the supervision of the Palmer Area Biologist and supports and administers wildlife management programs in the Mat‑Su valley and surrounding mountain ranges. The incumbent regularly interacts with members of the public issuing licenses and permits, collecting harvest and field information. Daily work includes report writing, data analysis, public interaction, responding to nuisance wildlife issues, conducting surveys, investigations, capturing and handling wildlife in remote locations, and fieldwork that sometimes requires travel away from the duty station (1–2 weeks at a time). Fieldwork involves exposure to animals, biting insects, inclement weather, firearms, low‑level aircraft flights, and travel by boat or skiff. Aerial surveys are conducted in small aircraft at low altitude for extended periods, often in extremely cold conditions. Working Environment The incumbent works primarily from the Palmer area office, with sporadic fieldwork. The role requires sealing furbearers, bears, and sheep, and aiding members of the public at the front counter. It involves addressing human‑wildlife conflicts, especially with moose, and providing education or conflict resolution in the Matanuska‑Susitna Borough area. Fieldwork occurs in remote parts of southcentral Alaska and other RegionIV locations as needed, sometimes involving extended stays in remote field camps. The incumbent must be certified to carry firearms and bear spray, and may fly in small fixed‑wing aircraft or helicopter for surveys. Who we are looking for Knowledge of the life history of wildlife species in Alaska and a working knowledge of wildlife biology, ecology, and population dynamics. Experience capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of various large mammal species. Experience collecting data via aerial and ground investigations, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, and writing technical reports and presentations. Experience answering complex public inquiries on wildlife issues or regulatory requirements using good oral and written communication skills (e.g., explaining trapping/hunting regulations, obtaining a hunting permit, public access) while working in rural Alaska. Experience with firearms and proficiency in firearm use. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field (biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, natural resource management). AND one year of professional‑level biologist experience (e.g., Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent). Substitutions: A bachelor’s degree supplemented by the following credit hours can substitute for the required degree: at least 24 semester hours in the specified biological fields of which 16 are upper‑division, and at least 12 semester hours in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS. A master’s degree in the indicated fields substitutes for the year of professional experience. Firearms Requirement This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. Candidates with a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are disqualified.
