The Groundskeeper I is responsible for maintaining campus grounds, roads, and parking lots, including trash collection, seasonal landscaping, and snow removal. The role also involves assisting Event Services with set‑up and break‑down of event spaces, operating equipment such as forklifts and snow removal vehicles, and performing routine maintenance on grounds equipment. Job Duties and Responsibilities Maintain campus grounds, roads, parking lots, and walkways by collecting trash, emptying containers, and removing debris. Mow grassy areas, trim edges, and remove clippings from streets and sidewalks. Establish and maintain flowerbeds, shrubbery, and trees, including soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, thinning, mulching, feeding, watering, pruning, weeding, and removal as needed. Maintain and operate snow removal equipment—attach plough blades, salt spreaders, and hoppers to appropriate vehicles, keep roadways and sidewalks clear of ice and snow, and perform cleaning and repairs of equipment. Assist with set‑up and break‑down of room arrangements for college‑sponsored or special events: flooring, staging, furniture, seating, decorations, and other setup tasks. Assemble, relocate, or unload furniture and equipment for main campus and satellite facilities. Support freight unloading for college departments such as the Print Shop, Bookstore, and Central Services. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on all grounds equipment to ensure safe, efficient operation. Operate forklifts, front‑end loaders, tractors, bucket trucks, and other grounds equipment as needed. Maintain fire hydrants, manholes, storm drains, and storm‑water management ponds, ensuring safe and efficient operation in accordance with applicable codes. Maintain an inventory of campus signs, and install, repair, or remove signage as requested. Install, operate, and maintain the campus underground sprinkler system; ensure drainage and winterization of the system. Assist in transporting hazardous waste and other departmental disposals in compliance with college policies and procedures. Follow safety policies and use the required personal protective equipment. Perform other duties assigned by the Assistant Director and Director. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year of commercial experience or demonstrated basic knowledge in operating and maintaining commercial groundskeeping equipment. Ability to work safely and reliably with minimal supervision. Physical ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. during an 8‑hour shift. Capacity to work outdoors in varied weather, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and slippery conditions. Comfort with working on uneven surfaces and at elevated heights using ladders, scaffolding, or lifts. Valid driver’s license and good driving record as required by college policy. Preferred Qualifications Proven attendance and reliability record. Proficient oral, written, and electronic communication skills. Professional ability to assist and interact with culturally diverse students, faculty, staff, and the public. Eligibility Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full‑time basis; employment‑based visa sponsorship is not available. Only residents of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia are eligible for employment with the college.
