Lead Backend Architect [Remote]

The Lead Backend Architect will define and build the foundation of scalable backend systems that support innovative technology solutions.
This role focuses on designing reliable, high-performance services and APIs while driving architectural decisions across complex software platforms.
You will work closely with engineering, product, QA, DevOps, and other teams to deliver secure, efficient, and maintainable backend solutions.
The position requires deep expertise in Python-based development, distributed systems, and modern cloud-native engineering practices.

Accountabilities:

The Lead Backend Architect will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing backend platforms while providing technical leadership across engineering initiatives.

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using Python and Django.
• Architect distributed systems capable of supporting high-throughput, low-latency workloads with strong reliability.
• Develop and optimize data storage solutions using PostgreSQL and Redis, including schema design and performance improvements.
• Implement and maintain Elasticsearch solutions for search capabilities, indexing, and analytics across large datasets.
• Build and operate asynchronous processing systems using Celery, Redis, and background worker architectures.
• Develop secure and well-documented REST APIs with appropriate authentication, authorization, and versioning strategies.
• Write clean, maintainable, and test-driven code with strong automated test coverage using pytest or similar frameworks.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize backend services for scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers, QA teams, DevOps specialists, and product stakeholders to deliver complete solutions.
• Create technical documentation, architecture designs, APIs, and operational runbooks.
• Provide technical guidance and contribute to backend engineering best practices and standards.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced backend engineering leader with strong architectural expertise, advanced programming skills, and experience building production-scale systems.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of experience developing and maintaining backend systems in production environments.
• Strong expertise in Python and Django for backend application development.
• Proven experience designing scalable architectures and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including database schema design, optimization, and performance tuning.
• Experience using Redis for caching, messaging, and real-time data processing.
• Practical experience with Elasticsearch for search, indexing, and analytics workloads preferred.
• Strong understanding of API design, development, documentation, and testing practices.
• Experience building asynchronous processing systems with Celery and production background workers.
• Strong commitment to automated testing practices and unit test development using pytest or similar frameworks.
• Experience with Docker, containerized deployments, and modern DevOps practices.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and software delivery automation.
• Experience working within Agile/Scrum development environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams.
