$400kSociety for Scholarly Publishing
Annual Reviews (AR) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to synthesizing and integrating knowledge for the progress of science and the benefit of society.
We are seeking a dynamic and inspiring leader who will value our leadership role in scholarly communications and build upon it. Founded in 1932, AR is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of scientific and scholarly knowledge. At the heart of our business are 51 Annual Review journals spanning the biological, physical, and social sciences. Featuring dozens of world-leading authors, the AR archive tracks, summarizes, and makes accessible the remarkable evolution of science and technology and their impact on human society over nearly a century. Our journals rank among the highest in citation rate and in article longevity in their respective fields.
Recently, AR has expanded its scope by launching or acquiring four enterprises offering complementary services for scientific communication. In total, AR thus comprises:
- Fifty-one Annual Review journals, each providing in-depth, timely analyses in its field;
- Knowable Magazine, disseminating scientific knowledge even more broadly to wider audiences;
- The Charleston Hub, serving the library and information sciences community through conferences, publications, and professional engagement;
- Knowledge Unlatched, expanding open access to scholarly books and journals through collaborative funding and partnership models; and
- Underline Science, providing video and event services to scientific communities.
Each AR activity serves and supports a community of great importance to AR; collectively they constitute a remarkably comprehensive suite of vehicles to bring scientific knowledge to new audiences.
At the highest level, the President is responsible for:
- Ensuring the short- and long-term success, sustainability, and strategic direction of the organization as a whole and its programs, products, and services.
- Leading AR's operations and activities, working closely with the Board, editors and editorial committees, management team, affiliates, and staff to strengthen the organization's impact, effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
- Developing strategic objectives and priorities in partnership with the Board of Directors and in accordance with AR's mission and bylaws.
- Fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, accountability, and mutual respect.
- Cultivating and strengthening AR’s position as a leader in the scholarly communications industry.
Specific duties as President:
- Serves as the top executive and principal leader of Annual Reviews.
- Serves as a voting member of the Board of Directors, the Business Affairs Committee, and the Editorial Affairs Committee.
- Oversees organizational performance and financial stewardship in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer, reviewing operational, programmatic, and financial results to assess progress toward organizational objectives, support effective resource allocation, and ensure AR's long-term sustainability.
- Provides leadership and oversight for the intellectual direction, quality, integrity, and impact of AR's journals and publications.
- Leads discussion and adoption of editorial policies and initiatives with the Editorial Affairs Committee, Board of Directors, and staff.
- Represents AR within the global research, scholarly, and publishing communities, serving as an ambassador for the organization and for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge.
- Researches and recommends new business initiatives to the Business Affairs Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Manages a team of 10 department directors and an executive assistant, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, organizational policies, and governance requirements.

- 10+ years senior leadership experience, preferably in scholarly publishing or academic societies, education, research, publishing or the technology industry serving the research community.
- Experience developing organizational strategy, anticipating future trends, aligning resources with priorities, and balancing mission, short and long-term needs, impact and financial sustainability.
- Familiarity with factors affecting the scientific publishing industry, the opportunities and challenges they present for AR, and an ability to address them boldly and imaginatively.
- Experience effectively leading organizational growth and change.
