Senior Counsel-Regulatory

• Hybrid 3 days/week in office

• This position can be based in either our Washington DC Harrisburg PA or Canonsburg PA office locations. (Preference for Washington DC)

Job Summary
Provides legal advice to NiSource and its operating companies on complex regulatory matters. Combines knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of business goals and objectives. Has significant experience and subject matter expertise.

• Resolves legal issues and provides proactive business-savvy legal advice and counsel.

• Manages complex regulatory matters before the Maryland Public Service Commission the Virginia State Corporation Commission the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

• Regular travel to the Maryland Public Service Commission (Baltimore MD) and occasional travel to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (Richmond VA) Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (Harrisburg PA) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Washington DC).

• Retains and supervises/manages outside counsel on select matters.

• Anticipates internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.

• Reviews and revises legal documents.

• Negotiates with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes.

• Assists in training clients on legal issues.

• Communicates with clients regarding status updates

• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications For Position

• Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school

• Experience with independent case handling responsibility

• Exemplary personal and professional integrity and business ethics

• Commitment to diversity and a respect for others

• Ability to function autonomously

• Ability to balance the legal issues of a project with the goals of the business through the demonstration of strong pragmatic business acumen and the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice

• Strong logical legal mind with the ability to apply abstract concepts of law to make timely well-reasoned and appropriate decisions to solve problems

• Ability to work efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

• Adaptable to changing environments.

• Sound judgment

• Strong counseling skills and able to work closely with clients

• Knowledge of state and federal laws

• Knowledge of interaction between state and federal laws and agencies

• Overtime and some travel required

• Licensed to practice law in at least one state in the U.S. Maryland and/or Virginia bar license(s) preferred and a member in good standing with the state bar(s) upon hire

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

• Experience in the utility industry or other regulated industry is strongly preferred

• Experience at a law firm or publicly traded corporation

• Has significant experience and subject matter expertise

• 5 years of legal regulatory experience

As a public utility NiSource provides essential services to customers 24/7. Emergency needs can arise at various times throughout the year including during storm season. Employees may be required to support emergency response efforts which could include working outside normal hours or assisting with tasks outside of typical responsibilities.
