Reinsurance, Director and Actuary

Overview: The Director of Reinsurance serves as a key ambassador for Talcott, building and maintaining strategic relationships with cedants and other external stakeholders. Working closely with actuarial, finance, legal, investments, and risk management, the Reinsurance Operations team has a unique enterprise-wide perspective and direct visibility into many of the company's most significant strategic initiatives. Success in the role requires a combination of technical expertise, business judgment, project leadership, and relationship management, offering an uncommon opportunity to influence both day-to-day operations and the long-term success of Talcott's reinsurance platform. Reinsurance Operations serves as the operational engine behind Talcott's reinsurance strategy, responsible for translating multi-billion-dollar transactions into successful long-term partnerships through treaty administration, financial settlements, collateral management, governance, reporting, and ongoing relationship management.As reinsurance continues to be one of the insurance industry's most significant and evolving regulatory topics, the Director of Reinsurance will have the opportunity to stay at the forefront of emerging developments, engage with industry groups and counterparties, collaborate with senior leadership, and help shape the company's response to regulatory initiatives that are influencing the future of the global reinsurance marketplace. Our preferred candidate will work on a hybrid arrangement in our Hartford, CT. office. Remote work will be considered for this position.Responsibilities:Inforce Reinsurance ManagementServe as the primary internal and external point of contact for cedant counterparties on assumed reinsurance transactions.Manage ongoing counterparty relationships, including timely responses to questions, requests, and emerging issues.Ensure Talcott meets contractual obligations, deliverables, and reporting requirements under applicable reinsurance agreements.Coordinate with internal subject matter experts to research, address, and resolve counterparty questions or operational issues.Lead periodic counterparty meetings and participate in in-person visits, as appropriate.Perform review and analysis of settlement statements and other cedant reportingCorporate Development TransactionsSupport Corporate Development in due diligence for potential reinsurance transactions, acquisitions, and other strategic opportunities.Partner with Legal and Corporate Development to review auction drafts, transaction documents, and final agreements to help ensure provisions are operationally feasible, and favorable to Talcott.Serve as the primary business lead for operationalizing new transactions, working with project managers and subject matter experts across Investments, ERM, Finance, Actuarial, Treasury and other functions.Lead development of operational processes, controls, and governance routines to support Talcott’s contractual obligations, including settlement procedures, required balance calculations, trust funding processes, investment compliance reporting, and non-guaranteed element setting.Drive cross-functional issue resolution and ensure operational readiness prior to transaction close or implementation.Affiliate Reinsurance StructuresLead the structuring and implementation of affiliate reinsurance transactions.Coordinate with internal and affiliate subject matter experts to ensure transaction documents accurately reflect the intended structure and support operational readiness.Partner with Legal and outside counsel to draft, review, and negotiate required legal documents, as appropriate.Support regulatory filings and related approvals associated with affiliate reinsurance transactions.Support settlement processing and provide review/analysis as neededQualifications:Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, economics, business, finance, accounting or a related field.Minimum of 5 years of experience in life insurance, annuities, reinsurance, insurance, finance, corporate development, actuarial, risk management or related insurance fields of interestStrong understanding of life and annuity insurance products, reinsurance concepts and insurance financial principlesActuarial designation of an ASA is requiredExperience reviewing, negotiating or operationalizing reinsurance agreements, trust agreements, settlement procedures, reporting requirements or related transaction documents is preferredDemonstrated ability to manage internal and external business relationships, respond to counterparty requests and drive issues to resolution.Strong critical thinking, analytical and reasoning skillsAbility to manage multiple high-priority tasks with shifting prioritiesExcellent written and oral communication skillsExperience leading cross-functional initiatives involving Legal, Actuarial, Finance, Investments, ERM, Operations, Banking or similar subject matter experts is a plusDemonstrated professional diplomacy with the ability to work effectively with senior leaders, peers and external business partnersFamiliarity with reinsurance collateral, trust funding, required balance calculations, investment compliance reporting, regulatory filings, hedging or reserving is preferredJobFunctionMPPayTypeSalaryTravelRequiredtrueTravelPercentage10HiringMinRate135000HiringMaxRate188000
