Position Description A PPLY IMMEDIATELY AS THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME INITIAL INTERVIEWS TENATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 11, 2026 The Fresno County Department of General Services invites applications for the position of Building Maintenance Engineer. Incumbents install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment in Fresno County facilities. This is a journey level (experienced level) classification and the incumbent is expected to use appropriate procedures and techniques in accomplishing assigned tasks. As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. Fresno County detention facilities are "No Hostage" facilities. In the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release. Samples of Duties Please click here to review the Samples of Duties Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Please click here to review the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum Qualifications Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below: OPTION 1 Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience in the crafts/mechanical trades field performing maintenance, installation, and/or repairs on mechanical equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting. OPTION 2 Certification: Possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited college, apprenticeship, or trade school in the crafts/mechanical trades field. Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience in the crafts/mechanical trades field performing maintenance, installation, and/or repairs on mechanical equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting. In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required: License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver’s license, or equivalent. Other: As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. SELECTION PROCESS Pursuant to Fresno County Personnel Rule 4 - Selection Process, applicants may be required to complete an examination process and successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur. Should a recruitment be open on a continuous basis, eligibles shall be certified in the order they are received not to exceed the maximum certification the department is entitled to. Tentative Initial Interview Dates: September 11, 2026 Subsequent interviews will be conducted approximately two weeks following candidate certification to the hiring department. Please Note: The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months, and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
