Engineering Designer

Job Title We are searching for an entry-level Electrical Engineering Designer to join the Mechanical – Electrical Design and Drafting Service Center of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. In this role, you will assist in the design, analysis, manufacture, and procurement support of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) for ARL’s research offices. ARL is a DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes transitioning military members. Responsibilities Support cutting‑edge research utilizing PCB software to create schematics, PCBs, assemblies, library parts, bills of materials, and other documentation. Collaborate with technical staff on conceptual design of electro‑mechanical systems. Assist with or facilitate material selection, packaging, tolerance analysis, manufacturing support, and cost projections. Provide work status updates and present in design review meetings with senior staff. Assist and support senior technical staff in evolving design methods, templates, and techniques for new research programs. Assist and support the development or evaluation of new software tools and work processes to improve department capabilities, reporting, and efficiency. Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience Basic working knowledge of electronic circuits and components in analog and digital design. Microsoft Office and Adobe products. Proven success in collaborations within a diverse, multidisciplinary, team‑oriented culture. Basic PC board design software experience (e.g., schematic layout, library part creation). Understanding of product life‑cycle management (PLM) and configuration management (CM). Familiarity with IPC standards. Preferred Experience PCB design software – component creation, schematic layout, board design (Altium). Electronics industry knowledge from PCB design through manufacturing. Experience with new software tools and process improvement. Education & Experience Associate Degree: 2+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent education/experience). Alternatively, no prior work experience required; education or equivalent experience is acceptable. Salary & Benefits Salary range: $46,800.00 – $77,304.00. Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, vision coverage, robust retirement plans, paid time off, and a generous 75% tuition discount for employees and eligible families. Work Location Position requires 100% on‑site work at Penn State University, with the possibility of hybrid work based on research requirements. Remote/hybrid options are not guaranteed. Background Checks & Clearance Employment requires successful background checks. All employees must be eligible for a government security clearance, comply with the ARL drug‑testing program, and adhere to monitoring requirements.
