Job Title: Controller Reports To: Senior Director of Accounting Operations & Finance Compliance FLSA Status: Exempt About Gleaners Community Food Bank Through hundreds of mobile distributions and more than 600 community food and fund drives this past fiscal year, we bring together volunteers, partners, and neighbors to help ensure no family goes without. Gleaners Community Food Bank of southeastern Michigan exists to provide households with access to sufficient, nutritious food and related resources. As a member of the Feeding America network, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, we work alongside food banks across the state and country to move our communities closer to food security. Gleaners' generous donors, volunteers, and more than 300 partner agencies worked together to help us serve more than 1 million households across southeast Michigan last fiscal year. Position Summary The Controller is responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant execution of day-to-day accounting operations. This hands‑on leadership role ensures transaction‑level integrity, disciplined close processes, enforcement of internal controls, and audit‑ready financial records. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Close Own daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and inventory accounting. Lead month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes. Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Ensure financial records comply with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Internal Controls & Policy Execution Enforce established accounting policies and internal control procedures. Monitor segregation of duties, approvals, and documentation standards. Identify control gaps and elevate risks or issues as appropriate. Grant & Program Accounting Execution Execute transaction‑level grant accounting in accordance with established guidance. Track restricted funding and ensure accurate expense coding and documentation. Prepare and validate Feeding America Network activity reports (NAR)‑related operational and financial inputs (“mini‑NARs”). Ensure NAR inputs reconcile to the general ledger and inventory systems. Audit Execution Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and accounting documentation. Serve as the primary accounting contact during audit fieldwork. Implement corrective actions related to audit findings. Other Duties and Responsibilities Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees, and developing personal growth opportunities. Accomplish staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; conducting training; enforcing policies and procedures. Demonstrate and support the Gleaners’ mission, vision, and values throughout all professional responsibilities and activities. Foster a culture of professionalism, team cohesion, and accountability. Support open and transparent communication; effectively work cross‑functionally across organizational and department boundaries. Other duties as assigned. Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred. 5‑7+ years of progressive accounting experience, nonprofit experience preferred. Previous experience leading a team. Strong knowledge of GAAP, month‑end close, and internal controls. Experience with inventory and program‑based accounting environments. Required Skills/Abilities Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks concurrently. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgement. Strong sense of urgency and demonstrated initiative. Ability to quickly pivot in accordance with the needs of the organization. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. General Technology Skills/Abilities/Work Environment Proficient in Microsoft Office 365; specifically, employees are required to use Outlook as well as Excel, Word, Power Point and Publisher as they are regularly used to perform the duties of this job. Experience with Blackbaud RE & FE software. Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms (Teams, Zoom, etc.).
