How you will make an Impact (Job Summary) Under the direction of the Machine Shop Manager, the Machinist/CNC Programmer produces machined parts by loading, unloading, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine or manual machines. The role requires developing CNC programs and technical documentation for production purposes while maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping accurate records, and maintaining equipment and supplies. What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities) While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be: 1. Training and Development: Create instructions and setup sheets for operators. Write programs and modify existing ones for increased efficiency. Participate in educational opportunities and read technical publications. 2. Technical and Programming: Review 3D CAD models and blueprints. Make calculations for programming, tooling, and material requirements. Analyze job orders and perform necessary calculations. Analyze and select feeds and speeds for programs. Improve complex setups and inefficient programs. Simplify tooling selection for operators to increase productivity. Prepare geometric layout of designs and toolpaths using proper software, including nesting. Determine the sequence of operations in a program. Choose the necessary cutting tools. 3. Quality Assurance: Check completed programs by running simulations or tests. Validate designs to ensure they reduce time and cost. Monitor programs to ensure they follow blueprint specifications and complete tasks safely. Verify settings by measuring positions, first‑run parts, and sample workpieces, adhering to defined quality standards. Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, cutting, and finishing operations; adjust and reprogram controls, sharpen or replace worn tools, and adhere to QA procedures. 4. Technical Operations: Produce parts as directed by schedule or Lead person. Safely operate machine tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops, and stock pushers as trained. Follow instructions from Lead person, work orders, blueprints, and specifications. 5. Safety and Compliance: Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Safely operate mills and lathes, following zero and reference points. 6. Documentation and Communication: Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and needs. Communicate with operators running the programs. Document actions by completing production and quality logs. Update job knowledge through educational opportunities. Own new and different requests to add value to job accomplishments. What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education) Required Experience: Minimum 5 years Machine Shop Experience. Basic math, reading, and writing skills. Mechanical assembly understanding. Ability to read and interpret GD&T. Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions. Conceptual process‑improvement, communication, technical skills, instrumentation, tooling, inventory control, judgment, and attention to detail. Preferred experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities: Experience creating nesting programs using Autodesk Fusion. Team‑oriented mindset. Safe Work Habits. CAD/CAM nesting software proficiency. Physical Requirements: Remain standing for long periods. Frequent carrying, grasping, reaching, pulling, and stooping for parts and supplies. Education & Certifications: High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Working Environment, Schedule and Travel: Normal work hours (5–8 hour days, Monday–Friday).
