Job Description

This role involves safely loading and unloading cargo on and off ships and working with lifting and securing equipment such as chain falls, pulleys, and winches. You will install, operate, and repair rigging equipment to move heavy machinery and materials in a shipyard environment while following all applicable safety standards and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload cargo on and off ships using appropriate rigging techniques and equipment.

• Set up, operate, and dismantle rigging equipment including chain falls, pulleys, and winches to move heavy machinery and materials safely.

• Secure, fasten, and lock loads using chains, ropes, knots, and other rigging hardware to ensure stability and safety during lifting and movement.

• Inspect rigging equipment such as pulleys, winches, and chain falls before use to identify wear, damage, or defects.

• Perform repairs and maintenance on pulleys, winches, chain falls, and related rigging equipment to keep them in safe working condition.

• Install new pulleys, winches, chain falls, and associated rigging components as required for shipyard operations.

• Read and interpret prints and other technical documents to determine rigging requirements, load paths, and equipment placement.

• Coordinate with other team members and departments to plan and execute lifting and moving operations efficiently and safely.

• Follow OSHA and site-specific safety procedures and guidelines at all times while working in the shipyard environment.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 3 years of experience as a rigger or in a closely related role such as boatswain’s mate, working with rigging equipment in an industrial or maritime environment.

• Proficiency in operating chain falls, pulleys, and winches to lift and move heavy equipment and machinery.

• Demonstrated ability to secure, fasten, and lock loads using chains, ropes, knots, and other rigging tools and hardware.

• Ability to read and interpret prints and technical drawings to determine rigging configurations and requirements.

• Experience performing repairs and installations on pulleys, winches, and chain falls.

• OSHA qualification or certification relevant to rigging or industrial safety.

• Eligibility to obtain DBIDS access for work on secured facilities.

• Strong awareness of safety practices and regulations in a shipyard or similar heavy industrial environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Boatswain’s mate or similar maritime role involving rigging and deck operations.

• Experience working with heavy equipment and machinery in a shipyard or marine setting.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, outdoor industrial environment.

• Strong problem-solving skills to address rigging challenges and equipment issues on site.

Work Environment

This position is based in a shipyard and primarily involves outdoor work. You will work around ships, heavy machinery, and industrial equipment in an active marine environment. You will use rigging equipment such as pulleys, winches, chain falls, and related tools on a regular basis, and you must follow all site-specific safety rules and access requirements.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Norfolk, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
