Registered Dietitian (Bariatric Services)

The primary purpose of the Registered Dietitian (Bariatric Services) position is to plan, develop, implement, and coordinate all phases of nutritional care for outpatients and inpatients. The focus of responsibility of this job is to provide dietary services to patients in the weight management center, including obesity medicine and bariatric surgery. Primary responsibilities include Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Care Plan Development & Follow Up, Nutrition Education and Nutrition Counseling for weight loss management of the patients.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

• Performs nutrition assessments in the time frame consistent with the NJ State Health Code and/or policy and procedure for Bariatric Services and Weight Loss Management, and triages patients into appropriate level of care. Determines time frame for follow-up intervention and intensity of nutritional care required. Assessments should accurately reflect the patient's nutritional risk factors in relation to their medical and/or psychiatric condition and treatment. Documents all nutritional care provided to patient in the medical chart (EPIC).
• Assesses the bariatric surgery patient by screening the medical record, completing a comprehensive assessment based on medical record data and interview with the patient and by assessing the patient based on religious, cultural, and ethnic preferences. Documents desired outcomes specific to the individual patient problem(s), diagnosis(es), learning capabilities/limitations, and progress towards established goals.
• Recommends appropriate nutrition interventions to the bariatric surgery patient preoperatively and postoperatively based on subjective and objective information, including, but not limited to, protein parameters, iron level, vitamin levels, and calcium levels in accordance with appropriate diet orders. Adapts orders to best fulfill individual needs and conforms to the patient's educational level, cultural and religious preferences.
• Attends and actively participates in interdisciplinary conferences, multidisciplinary clinical rounds, peer reviews and discharge planning. Works closely with the Weight Management Team and Bariatric team as an integral part of bariatric surgery. Maintains accurate nutritional records and communicates appropriate nutritional care to the primary care physician or designee.
• Demonstrates clinical competency in all areas of clinical nutrition by maintaining 15 CEU's per year, participation in peer review and cross training educational activities. Develops and implements clinical research projects collaboratively with the Bariatric and Weight Loss Management team.
• Educates patients and family members on nutritional requirements, and therapy based on cultural, religious, and ethnic preferences. Individualizes patient education materials based on patient's age and comprehension levels. Provides appropriate resources and education according to identified need. Documents education provided, including evidence of family teaching (as applicable), measurable understanding of principles discussed, and assessment of anticipated compliance.
• Participates in patient group teaching as assigned. Serves as a nutrition educator by providing education, lectures, and programs to University Hospital staff, patients, and the community. Evaluates and develops nutrition education materials with post tests to support client learning and ability to provide self-care.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

Required

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition or a related field plus registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills required.
• Must work well independently to prioritize patient care and work well as part of the Bariatric team and Weight Loss Management Center.

Preferred

• Master's Degree preferred.
• Two (2) years of work experience as a Registered Dietitian preferred.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is PS25S: $71,728.00 - $86,410.00- $102,903.00 per year. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs.
