Surgical Tech - Ambulatory Surgery Center

As a free‑standing surgical facility, the UNC Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) provides surgical care to both pediatric and adult patients. The ASC supports the following services: Orthopedics (Sports), ENT/OHN, plastic surgery, general laparoscopic surgery, general oncology, pediatric urology, urology, and dental. Scrubbing is preferred, but not required. Candidates are preferred to have proficiency in either sports orthopedics or ENT. The schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm (four 10‑hour shifts per week) with one self‑assigned late shift per week. No weekends, no call, no holidays. Summary: The Surgical Technologist I works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. They have baseline knowledge and ability to perform duties of surgical scrub at the entity they serve. Responsibilities Perform technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process. Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation. Follow aseptic technique, proactively identifying contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implementing corrective actions. Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies appropriately. Label drugs and solutions and monitor quantities used. Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens. Actively participate in the planning and set‑up of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure. Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities that affect the surgical procedure. Assist in picking cases and planning of instrument needs. Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, developing modifications to standard approaches to care and communicating with the surgical team. Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital‑wide emergency management plans. Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership. Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment, assisting with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub‑sterile areas. Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice. Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary. Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician trainees and serve as a preceptor as needed. Education and Requirements Education: None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Licensure/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification; Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech. Professional Experience: 0–3 years. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Successful completion of service‑specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies; strong communication skills and customer service relations; excellent organizational and priority‑setting skills.
