The Mechanical Engineer II will apply their professional and technical expertise to designing mechanical engineering concepts and options that align with the owner’s vision for each project. This individual should have a solid understanding of the consulting engineering process and the contractual documents which are involved. Responsibilities Determine the scope of assigned projects and utilize software programs to create the mechanical engineering designs including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection, or other mechanical systems Determine cost-effective system layouts, quantities/sizes, and specifications, and verify code compliance of the system designs Preparation and layout of BIM drawings and coordination with all other disciplines at all phases of project production, including schematic design phase, design development phase, permitting phase, and construction documents phase Perform construction administration tasks including, but not limited to, site observations, shop drawing review, and preparation of punch lists Define appropriate project scope and ensure it is accurately reflected in the contract documents; proactively manage any possible scope of work variances to ensure client satisfaction and that projects stay on track Maintain excellent business relationships and communication with clients, partners, architects, owners, other design and construction professionals, and various code officials regarding the overall engineering project, associated assignments, and action items Support with mentoring more inexperienced mechanical designers Qualifications Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and based in Houston, TX Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering At least 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering design of commercial buildings preferably in aviation, higher education, health care, hospitality, entertainment, or governmental facilities At least 2 years of experience coordinating with multi-discipline engineering teams Experience with a variety of project deliverable methods including design-build, design-bid-construct, fast-track and other construction delivery methods Knowledge of local, state, and national codes, including other aspects of laws, regulations, and potential liabilities affecting the practice of engineering Revit MEP proficiency required, and familiarity with other engineering software programs Highly proficient technical/computer skills including Microsoft O365 (Outlook, Work, Excel), internet and web applications Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills; ability to clearly convey information, ideas, and concepts verbally, written, or in graphic form Ability to prepare original specifications for project systems and components, as well as complete project manuals with sub-consultant specifications Must have the technical knowledge and hands‑on experience to effectively evaluate various mechanical engineering options for configuration of equipment and components Experience with cost containment and reduction approaches Uses resources efficiently, strives to reduce cost Strong conflict management abilities — a good listener, committed to finding solution to problems, works to address difficulties Comfortable maintaining professional relationships with clients, vendors, code officials, etc. Works well with internal and external teams, promotes a positive image of the company, strives to solve issues raised by customers Meets deadlines, works independently or as part of a team, accountable, maintains focus on set objectives and goals Excellent attention to detail and thoroughness in deliverables and communications, maintains high‑quality standards, and good follow‑up skills Ethical, honest, and accountable; maintains confidentiality, handles sensitive information with discretion and professionalism Has a bias for action and seeks new opportunities for continual improvement Keeps information organized and accessible, maintains efficient workspace, manages time well Monitors status of projects, thoroughly deals with project details, holds project owners accountable, delivers clear, accurate depiction of status Looks for opportunities to increase knowledge, works to increase responsibility, strives to achieve personal goals Ability to work effectively in a group or team environment as well as independently; values input and opinions of others Physical Requirements Must have the ability to perform the necessary job‑related functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
