Overview Lead a Team That Helps Keep Virginia Beach Safe, Vibrant, and Thriving — Code Enforcement Supervisor. The Code Enforcement Division protects the health, safety, and quality of life of Virginia Beach residents. As a Code Enforcement Supervisor , you will lead a team of Housing Code Inspectors who ensure that existing structures, properties, and neighborhoods meet local and state building and property maintenance standards. This is a leadership role focused on problem solving, public service, mentorship, and community impact. This role manages daily operations, supports inspectors in the field, collaborates with community partners, and upholds the City’s commitment to safe and well-maintained neighborhoods. What You’ll Do Oversee and support a team of Housing Code Inspectors by prioritizing and assigning inspections and daily workload. Conduct performance evaluations and ensure ongoing training and certification. Make recommendations related to hiring, discipline, and staffing needs. Supervise field investigations and inspections in an assigned area of the City to enforce codes. Review enforcement actions to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance. Help resolve complex or high-profile code violation cases and provide guidance on compliance strategies for difficult or sensitive cases. Respond to challenging public inquiries and explain code requirements; engage with civic leagues, realtors, business groups, and community members; and serve as a liaison to other City departments and agencies. Prepare or participate in cases requiring civil or criminal prosecution; apply mediation and conflict-resolution skills to resolve disputes. Administer City contracts for services such as vehicle abatement, graffiti removal, and grass and weed removal; drive a City vehicle for field tasks. Perform additional related duties as assigned. Required: Completion of state-mandated Core and Property Maintenance Training Modules; Certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; Completion of Residential Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing modules; Certification as a Residential Mechanical Inspector. Must have a valid driver’s license. Special requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours due to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
