Summary The position is located within the Engineering Service at the Eastern Kansas Health Care System (EKHCS). The incumbent performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, modification, and repair of electrical systems and associated equipment supporting facility operations within a hospital and healthcare environment. Responsibilities The position is responsible for maintaining electrical distribution systems, power circuits, control circuits, lighting systems, emergency power systems, and associated electrical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and continuous operation of medical center facilities and infrastructure. Work includes interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, specifications, and applicable electrical codes to complete assigned work independently with minimal supervision. The major duties include but are not limited to: Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, schematics, and electrical maintenance and repair and operation manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determines placement of distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and to use trade formulas to calculate common properties. Applies knowledge of electrical principles, materials, and equipment to install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems. Uses shop mathematics and trade formulas to calculate electrical properties such as voltage, resistance, current flow, voltage drop, load requirements, and power relationships in single-phase and multi-phase systems. Applies skill in laying out, assembling, installing, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in industrial, commercial, and institutional settings. Uses a wide range of hand tools, portable power tools, and specialized trade equipment such as conduit benders, cable pullers, and threading machines to complete installations and repairs. Applies basic knowledge of related building trades as needed to coordinate electrical work with structural, mechanical, and other building systems. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD10539A Physical Requirements: Work usually entails considerable walking, lifting, stretching, stooping, and some climbing, indoors and out, throughout the hospital complex. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 40 pounds, either alone or with others. Occasionally works from ladders, platforms, high places, cramped areas and holds awkward positions for prolonged periods. The employee works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and is exposed to usual occupational hazards. Works in manholes, crawl spaces, attics, and similar confined areas. Sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work area, that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet; and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary device, such as electrical motors. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
