Location: This position is with INDOT's Bluffton Sub-District.

Pay Rate: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Mechanic positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
• Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components. Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies. Perform minor body repair work.
• Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
• Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
• Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
• Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
• Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
• Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
• Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
• Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.
• Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.
• Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis. Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.
• Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success: Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
• Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
• Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
• Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.
• A degree is not required. However, at least a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma and at least 1+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
• Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
