Police Officer - Pre-Service

Police Officer – Pre‑Service Police Officers under direct supervision perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; they control traffic flow, enforce state and local traffic regulations, conduct investigations, and perform related duties as required. Working Hours All Police Officers work four ten‑hour days. Responsibilities Patrol the city in radio car, motorcycle, or on foot; answer calls for protection of life and property, and enforce City, County, and State laws. May conduct preliminary and follow‑up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, holdups, vehicle accidents, death, and other criminal incidents. Make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court. Contact and cooperate with other law‑enforcement agencies in investigating crimes and apprehending offenders. Prepare reports of arrests, investigations, and unusual incidents. Serve warrants and subpoenas. While on patrol, stop drivers violating laws; warn drivers, issue citations, and make arrests. Check buildings for security, receive, search, book, fingerprint, and transport prisoners; direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergencies. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law‑enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public. As assigned, perform specialized investigative, identification, crime‑prevention, special operations, aerial observation, communications or juvenile work. Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent. Within the last three years, must have successfully completed a California Basic POST Certified Academy or Level One Modular Academy. Applicants may also qualify if they have reached the half‑way point of either academy; they must graduate by the time of appointment. Special Requirements Possession of a valid class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and swing and graveyard shifts. Candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including polygraph, psychological evaluation, and medical evaluation. Grooming Standards All applicants must present themselves professionally: no facial hair, ear plugs, or hoop earrings. Males must have a well‑groomed haircut with the back of the hair no longer than the bottom of the natural neckline. Females must wear hair pulled back into a ponytail or bun if hair is long enough. Attire Male and female applicants must dress in suit or formal business attire. T‑shirts, tank tops, jeans, shorts, or sandals are not allowed. Tattoo Requirements All tattoos must be covered by business attire; temporary cover‑ups are not accepted. Enforcement All listed standards and requirements are strictly enforced in accordance with current department policies.
