Assistant Head Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

Job Overview The Alfred University Assistant Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach assists the head coach with organization and management of the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field programs. Responsibilities include teaching and coaching student-athletes for competitive success, mentoring for academic and personal excellence, meeting recruiting goals, civic engagement, budget and schedule management, fundraising, and developing positive relationships with alumni and parents. Salary: $62,354 – $64,853 annually Essential Functions Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct and professional judgment. Provide a nurturing, intellectual, and supportive teaching and learning environment that respects individual differences. Assist in development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare athletes for competition. Assist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability. Assist in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that supports the educational mission of the university and athletic department. Direct student athletes, part‑time assistant coaches, and support staff to conduct themselves in ways that bring credit to the team and Alfred University. Recruiting Implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University’s mission under the direction of the head coach. Cultivate a recruiting network. Assist in maintaining the department’s recruiting contact management system. Recruit student‑athletes that align with the academic profile of Alfred University students. Maintain open communication with other Alfred University coaches regarding shared prospects. Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes. Assist the head coach in meeting recruiting goals. Professional Development Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations. Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities and participate in department professional development seminars. Civic Engagement Promote sport in area communities. Establish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g., youth groups, civic organizations, media). Program Management Comply with institutional and departmental policies. Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations. Supervise part‑time assistant coaching staff. Work collaboratively with department staff. Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities. Work with advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities. Maintain professional coach‑athlete relationships. Develop positive relationships with alumni and parents of current and prospective student‑athletes. Other Duties & Responsibilities Serve on a departmental operational team (10%). If the successful candidate has NSCA‑CSCS certification, the appointment will include coaching strength and conditioning within the athletics department. Assist with department initiatives. Represent the department on campus committees. Support and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff, and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives. Support and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff, and students, and expanding access to the AU experience. Maintain a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies. Participate in required assigned training, including safety training, and comply with safety rules and protocols. Effective written and oral communication skills. Contribute to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications – Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Formal Education: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in education, health science, sport management, or related field. Experience: Minimum four years as a collegiate cross country and track & field student‑athlete and/or coach, and at least two years of collegiate track and field coaching. Demonstrated successful recruiting and retention at NCAA Division I preferred. Additional Knowledge/Skills: Proven organizational skills and a commitment to student growth and academic achievement. Overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset (e.g., NSCA‑CSCS). Integrity, high ethical standards, excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license. First Aid, AED, and CPR certification required by start date. Willingness to work nights and weekends.
