Position Overview

Prep Academy Tutors of Greater Columbus is looking for exceptional  Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) Tutors who believe that the right instruction, delivered in the right environment, can make a lasting difference in a student's academic journey.

We are seeking experienced, certified teachers and highly qualified educators to provide personalized, one-on-one Reading and ELA tutoring to students in grades K–12 throughout the Columbus area. Our tutors work directly with students in their homes, creating focused learning environments where students can ask questions, build literacy skills, strengthen confidence, and make meaningful academic progress.

This role is especially well suited for current or former classroom teachers who enjoy the individualized nature of tutoring and want the opportunity to work closely with students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

What You'll Do

As a  Reading/ELA Tutor , you will:

• Deliver engaging, one-on-one Reading and English Language Arts instruction to K–12 students in the student's home
• Provide support in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, writing, grammar, and language development, as appropriate to the student's grade level
• Help students strengthen foundational literacy skills and develop effective reading strategies
• Reinforce classroom instruction and help students master challenging Reading and ELA concepts
• Adapt lessons, materials, and instructional strategies to each student's individual learning needs and academic level
• Assist with reading assignments, writing projects, essays, homework, and classroom coursework
• Support students in developing critical reading, writing, communication, and analytical skills
• Help students prepare for classroom assessments, standardized tests, and other academic evaluations
• Identify areas of academic difficulty and develop targeted strategies for improvement
• Help students build confidence, motivation, and independence as readers and writers
• Establish positive, professional relationships with students and their families
• Monitor student progress and communicate meaningful observations and updates
• Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and develop greater academic confidence
• Maintain a professional, supportive, and productive in-home learning environment
• Travel to students' homes throughout the Columbus, Ohio area

What We're Looking For

We are looking for educators who bring strong knowledge of literacy and English Language Arts, genuine teaching experience, and a passion for helping students succeed.

Ideal candidates will have:

• A bachelor's degree or higher
• A valid Ohio teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential, preferably in English Language Arts, Reading, Elementary Education, or a related field
• Demonstrated classroom teaching experience
• Strong knowledge of Reading and English Language Arts instruction
• Experience working with students in grades K–12
• The ability to adapt instruction for different learning styles, abilities, and academic levels
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Patience, professionalism, reliability, and a student-centered approach
• Excellent organization and time-management skills
• Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to student homes
• Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

• Current or recent experience as a certified Reading, ELA, English, or elementary classroom teacher
• Experience teaching literacy or ELA in a public, private, or charter school
• Experience supporting struggling readers and students with literacy gaps
• Experience teaching phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
• Experience supporting students with dyslexia, learning differences, or other diverse academic needs
• Experience with writing instruction, including grammar, composition, essay writing, and academic writing
• Experience preparing students for standardized reading, writing, or ELA assessments
• Experience teaching honors, AP, college-preparatory, or advanced English coursework
• A master's degree or higher
• Experience providing private tutoring or individualized literacy/ELA instruction

Schedule

Tutors have the flexibility to build a schedule around their existing professional and personal commitments. Student assignments and tutoring hours are based on family needs, tutor availability, subject expertise, grade-level experience, and geographic location.

Afternoon, evening, and weekend availability may be particularly valuable.

Tutors may be matched with families based on their location, Reading/ELA expertise, grade-level experience, and availability.

Minimum Requirements

A successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree and meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Hold a valid Ohio teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential
• Have current or recent experience as a certified classroom teacher
• Have at least two years of classroom teaching experience in a public, private, or charter school
• Have experience as a lecturer or course instructor at an accredited U.S. college or university
• Be a graduate student with relevant teaching or teaching-assistant experience at an accredited U.S. college or university

Candidates must also demonstrate strong knowledge of Reading and English Language Arts and the ability to provide effective literacy instruction to K–12 students.
