Director of Safety and Health
Edwards Electrical & Mechanical Inc.
Director of Safety & Health
MEPX is seeking an experienced Director of Safety & Health to lead the company's safety and health strategy across construction operations.
This is a senior leadership role responsible for building and maintaining a strong safety culture, developing company-wide safety programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing risk, and partnering with operational leaders to keep employees safe across jobsites and facilities.
The Director of Safety & Health will work closely with executive leadership, project management, superintendents, field leadership, and employees to ensure safety is integrated into how work is planned and executed.
This role requires significant construction safety experience and a leader who is equally comfortable developing strategy, walking active jobsites, coaching field leaders, investigating incidents, and holding teams accountable.
What You'll Lead
Safety Leadership & Strategy
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve the company's overall safety and health program.
- Establish company-wide safety standards, expectations, policies, and procedures.
- Partner with executive and operational leadership to integrate safety into project planning and execution.
- Provide safety leadership and guidance to project managers, superintendents, foremen, and field teams.
- Establish measurable safety goals and track performance across projects and business units.
- Build accountability for safety performance at every level of the organization.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on prevention, employee engagement, and continuous improvement.
Construction Safety & Field Operations
- Provide safety oversight across active construction projects and company facilities.
- Conduct regular jobsite visits, audits, inspections, and safety observations.
- Evaluate project-specific hazards and ensure appropriate controls are established before work begins.
- Partner with field leadership on job hazard analyses, pre-task planning, site-specific safety plans, and corrective actions.
- Ensure subcontractors and employees comply with company, client, and project safety requirements.
- Support safety planning for high-risk construction activities.
- Identify trends and recurring hazards and work with operations to eliminate or reduce exposure.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, state, local, client, and company safety requirements .
- Maintain required safety programs, documentation, recordkeeping, and regulatory reporting.
- Monitor regulatory developments and update company practices as requirements change.
- Maintain OSHA logs and other required safety records.
- Coordinate regulatory inspections and responses as necessary.
- Partner with leadership, HR, insurance, risk management, and legal resources on significant safety matters.
Incident Management & Prevention
- Lead or oversee investigations involving injuries, near misses, property damage, and other safety incidents.
- Ensure investigations identify root causes rather than simply documenting the event.
- Develop and track corrective and preventive actions through completion.
- Analyze incident trends, leading indicators, and safety data to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Communicate significant safety risks and incidents to executive leadership promptly.
- Support return-to-work and workers' compensation processes in coordination with HR and applicable partners.
Training & Employee Development
- Develop and maintain safety training programs for employees and field leadership.
- Ensure employees receive required OSHA, company, client, and task-specific safety training.
- Support new-hire safety orientation and project-specific onboarding.
- Coach superintendents, foremen, project managers, and other leaders on their responsibilities for safety performance.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen field leadership's ability to recognize hazards and intervene before incidents occur.
Safety Systems & Performance
- Establish meaningful leading and lagging safety indicators.
- Monitor incident rates, observations, inspections, corrective actions, training completion, and other safety metrics.
- Provide leadership with clear reporting on safety performance, emerging risks, and improvement priorities.
- Maintain safety management systems, documentation, and records.
- Evaluate technology and process improvements that strengthen safety performance and field visibility.
- Support prequalification, client reporting, insurance requirements, and safety-related business-development needs.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of progressive construction safety experience , including leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience leading safety programs across active commercial, industrial, mechanical, electrical, or other complex construction environments.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and industry safety practices.
- Experience conducting jobsite inspections, audits, incident investigations, and root-cause analysis.
- Experience developing and implementing company-wide safety programs, policies, and training.
- Proven ability to work effectively with executives, project management, superintendents, foremen, and craft professionals.
- Strong understanding of construction means and methods and the hazards associated with field operations.
- Ability to analyze safety data and translate findings into practical corrective actions.
- Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel to active project sites as required.
Preferred Certifications
- CSP – Certified Safety Professional
- CHST – Construction Health and Safety Technician
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction
- First Aid/CPR/AED
- Additional construction safety or occupational health certifications are a plus.
The Right Fit
We're looking for a construction safety leader , not simply a compliance administrator.
The right person understands how construction actually gets built and knows how to work alongside operations to reduce risk without losing credibility with the field.
You'll need to be comfortable walking a jobsite with a superintendent in the morning, reviewing safety performance with executives in the afternoon, and stepping into an incident investigation when necessary.
This position requires someone who can establish standards and accountability while also building the relationships needed to influence behavior across the organization.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means:
- Safety expectations are clear, consistent, and understood across the organization.
- Project teams proactively identify and control hazards before work begins.
- Field leadership takes ownership of safety rather than relying solely on the safety department.
- Incidents, near misses, and trends are investigated thoroughly and corrective actions are completed.
- Safety data is accurate, actionable, and used to improve operations.
- Regulatory and client requirements are consistently met.
- Employees feel empowered to identify hazards, stop unsafe work, and raise concerns.
- Executive and operational leaders have clear visibility into safety performance and emerging risks.
Why This Role Matters
Safety directly affects our employees, their families, our projects, our clients, and the long-term success of the business
.
