Certified Surgical First Assist

Certified Surgical First Assistant Location: 5555 W Thunderbird St, Glendale, AZ; Schedule: 36 hours/week. Position Summary Under the direction of a surgeon, the Certified Surgical First Assistant assists in performing surgical procedures, performs intraoperative technical functions, and provides preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care. Core Functions Provides surgical assistance to surgeon for perioperative patient cases; prepares for procedures, pulls and ensures instruments and supplies are in good order, reviews case carts for correct items, troubleshoots equipment, and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs. Anticipates the surgeon's needs; maintains hemostasis, passes instruments, retracts tissue, uses and applies appropriate surgical instruments, places ties and suture ligatures, and performs other measures as directed. Demonstrates aseptic technique and universal precautions; disposes of sharps and trash, participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges, and prepares instruments for cleaning. Assists with the plan of care under physician direction; provides care based on orders in compliance with policies, procedures, standards of care, and regulatory requirements. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards; provides excellent service experience consistently. Serves as First Assistant in the operating room; follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, specimen handling, sharps, time‑out, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and instrument assembly/disassembly. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; current Basic Life Support certification; current surgical technologist certification; registration with State Regulatory Agency where applicable. At least two years of operating room experience and ability to scrub proficiently in a minimum of 2 surgical specialties. Manual dexterity, professional decorum in high‑stress situations, organized, conscientious, responsive to surgeon and patient needs, and commitment to continuous learning. Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology and First Assistant Certification; additional related education and/or experience preferred.
