Police Officer (Must be certified Peace Officer)

Officer Signing Agreement Incentive $10,000 hiring bonus for valid TCOLE certification prior to hiring. $4,000 for each completed year of state licensing agency, certified regular full-time, paid peace officer time, to a maximum of five (5) years for a total of up to $20,000. The incentive comes with an agreement of continued employment with the City of Beaumont Police Department for a minimum period of thirty‑six (36) months after hire date. Lateral Financial Transfers (Pay Scale) 0‑2 years: $76,656 2‑3 years: $78,876 3‑4 years: $81,096 4‑5 years: $85,524 5‑8 years: $87,876 8‑10 years: $90,000 10+ years: $97,848 Job Functions Responsible for the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes; maintains law and order; patrols assigned areas of the city in police vehicle; enforces traffic regulations that includes issuing citations; investigates collisions, crimes against property and persons, and complaints; interviews victims and witnesses; takes affidavits; apprehends persons suspected of crimes; responds to calls for service including disturbances, burglar alarms, gang activity, traffic/parking violations; serves warrants; writes various reports including offense, collision, and arrest; checks buildings and stores for security; testifies in court; takes calls from 911 Center Dispatchers and keeps them informed of location and status; administers first aid; operates MDT; must be able to render credible testimony. Knowledge Knowledge of modern police practices and methods; knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence; some knowledge of the geography of the city; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; some knowledge of first aid principles. Skills / Abilities Ability to deal firmly and courteously with other Police Officers and the public; ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action; ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation; ability to speak and write the English language effectively; ability to perform mathematical computations; ability to operate a portable and mobile radio; skill in operating a patrol unit; skill in the use and care of a firearm. Physical Requirements Constantly sees and hears, sits, speaks, and drives; frequently stands, walks, kneels, crouches, squats, twists; pushes, pulls, carries, drags; lifts heavy objects and people, pushes vehicles, and writes by hand; infrequently crawls, climbs, runs, fights and wrestles. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Must have normal hearing. Must possess functional dexterity in both hands. Education & Experience Applicants must hold a current TCOLE Peace Officer License or be currently enrolled in a TCOLE accredited Police Academy. Must be 21 years of age prior to appointment, a United States citizen and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. No convictions of any Class A misdemeanor or above, including DWI offenses; no convictions for any Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years; no convictions of any family violence offense. College coursework, four‑year degree, prior law enforcement, or military experience preferred. Qualifications Test Applicants will be required to pass the written and physical portions of the Job Related Abilities Test (JRAT). Written Exam Description The exam is multiple choice and covers reading comprehension, grammar syntax, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, arithmetic, and differential decision making. A writing exercise will also be completed. Time limit: Three (3) hours. A minimum score of 70% on the multiple‑choice portion is required to advance. Physical Ability Test Description The physical test measures strength, stamina, speed, and power necessary to complete critical job functions. Physical Test Events Event 1: Obstacle Course – approximately 900 ft distance, running, climbing, ducking, and jumping obstacles within two (2) minutes. Event 2: Handcuffing – lock and double‑lock handcuffs, then unlock within one (1) minute. Event 3: Victim Rescue – lift and drag a 180‑lb dummy approximately 50 ft within one (1) minute. Event 4: Weapons Test – twelve (12) trigger pulls with each hand within thirty (30) seconds. Event 5: Vehicle Push – push a standard patrol vehicle ten (10) feet on a paved, level surface with gear in neutral within one (1) minute. Event 6: Tire Change – remove a spare tire from a patrol vehicle and re‑install within one (1) minute. Every event will be pass or fail, and each must be passed to continue in the hiring process. Every event will be demonstrated before attempted. If an applicant fails an event and wishes a second attempt, the second attempt will be attempted before moving on to the next event.
