Lead Product Designer

Open Roles Lead Product Designer Lumi is the K-12 writing and literacy platform founded by Colin Kaepernick. Students plan, draft, revise, and publish real writing with an AI guide that coaches instead of writing for them, and teachers and district leaders see growth as it happens. We work with 15 districts and growing. We are a small, senior team, remote across the US, and we hire people who want to own a problem end to end. The role Lumi is one platform serving three very different users: students who need something closer to a consumer product, teachers who need a workflow tool that fits a 45-minute period, and district leaders who need clear evidence. You will own design across all three. That means holding consumer-grade craft and SaaS-grade rigor in the same head, and deciding when each one wins. You will be the first senior design hire and set the bar for how design works here: the system, the process, and the standard of what ships. Where we are Live in 15 districts and growing Students on Lumi for 10+ hours show nearly twice the standards proficiency rate of students under two hours (Lumi AI grader) A product that already changes how students write, and a design surface that has not caught up to it yet What you will do Own design end to end: research, product thinking, interaction, visual, and the system that ties them together Design the student writing experience so that revising a draft feels like something a ten-year-old wants to do again Design the teacher experience as a real workflow tool: creating a project, reading 28 drafts, deciding who needs a small group, all before the bell Design the district view so an administrator can see writing growth across schools without a training session Sit in classrooms and on district calls, then turn what you hear into prototypes within days, not quarters Work directly with the founders and engineering on what we build next, not just how it looks What you bring A portfolio that shows high-quality consumer product work and complex multi-role workflows, ideally both, with clear evidence of what you personally owned 7+ years of product design experience, including at least one product you took from early to mature Experience with one of two profiles, and curiosity about the other: workflow SaaS design for professional users (think Airtable, Canva, Notion), or consumer-grade design that earns daily habit (think Duolingo) Strong systems thinking: you build and maintain design systems rather than fight them Comfort making decisions with incomplete information and revising them in public Edtech experience is useful but not required. We would rather hire the best consumer or workflow designer we can find and teach them classrooms Compensation Salary range: $165,000-215,000 with equity and benefits Location Remote in the US with quarterly team trips #J-18808-Ljbffr
