JOB SUMMARY This position supports clinical pharmacy services in the Emergency Department (ED), providing real-time pharmacotherapy expertise in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED specialist collaborates with emergency medicine providers to ensure safe and effective medication use, supports rapid response, codes, and contributes to departmental initiatives focused on ED care. Responsibilities include bedside support, medication reconciliation, therapeutic interventions, and precepting pharmacy learners in the ED setting. Non-direct patient care activities may include cost savings initiatives, committee involvement, and participation in departmental projects and practice advancement efforts.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required Education Both PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program PGY1 with 5 years of progressive clinical practice experience Bachelor's Degree of Science degree or PharmD from ACPE accredited school of pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy Experience 5 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty with PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program or 8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty. Computer skills, data entry experience English (speaking, reading, writing). Good general health and stress coping ability. Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching, etc. Licenses and Certifications (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required Upon Hire and (TSBP) REG PHARMACY TECNICIAN Eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) is required Upon Hire and (TSBP) REG PHARMACY TECNICIAN - Texas license with TSBP within 30 days of date of hire within 30 Days (ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heat Association (AHA), or American Red Cross (ARC) required for only inpatient positions prior to or within 6 months of employment. JOB DUTIES Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards. Develops/implements process to meet/comply with JCAHO and regulatory requirements. Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty. Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment and pharmacokinetic calculations. Identifies opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care. Actively promotes pharmacy. Coordinates and participates in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publishes articles (i.e. staff newsletter), individualized drug information, rounds, consults, etc. Maintains high visibility/availability through participation in in-services, meetings and daily activities. Participates in the education/experiential training of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents. Actively manage P&T initiatives through monitoring of documented interventions. Verifies data, develops measures and reports outcomes (Performance Improvement). Supports cost savings initiatives. Has active role in assessment and selection of cost-effective pharmaceuticals. Reviews formulary addition request and develops monographs for presentation. Manage the formulary system and procedures for acquisition of non-formulary product. Consistently works and problem solves independently and effectively. Takes charge when necessary and is looked to for direction. Makes the right decisions and uses good judgment. Cross trained and multifunctional maintaining competency in multiple areas. Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel. Delegates appropriate/reasonable tasks and evaluates performance. Represents Pharmacy Department at P&T Committee and Service Line Meetings. Performs computer order entry in an accurate, thorough and timely manner. Reviews/updates medication profiles (therapies, allergies, height, weight, etc.) and is cognizant of patient charges. Reviews medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, overall effectiveness and safety. Seeks clarification if necessary and documents interventions (i.e., ADRs). Actively enhances personal growth and development by participating in educational programs, literature searches, in-services and meetings. Actively participates in new employee orientation and training and evaluations. Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records. Takes ownership in solving problems effectively, efficiently and to the satisfaction of the patient Presents constructive feedback regarding system or process failures and participates in resolution in a proactive and positive manner. Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with University Medical Center policy. Consistently maintains control of feelings, emotions and body language. Demonstrates through verbal and non-verbal communications openness to change or new ideas. Willingly learns and adapts to changes in work environment and new work methods as introduced. Demonstrates flexibility to fluctuating workload and effectively prioritizes assignments. Exhibits a positive attitude in support of the hospital and management, including decisions made by administration and/or management.
