Claim Analyst 1

About Indiana Unclaimed Property

Each year, millions of dollars in assets are turned over to the Indiana Attorney General's Office as unclaimed property. It's the job of the Attorney General's Unclaimed Property Division to help return these assets to their rightful owners.

Unclaimed property is any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time. This includes:

  • Dormant bank accounts
  • Lost or forgotten uncashed checks
  • Stocks or bonds, dividends, and bond interest
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Utility refunds
  • Safe-deposit box contents

Role Overview/Position Summary

  • Claim Analyst 1 is responsible for the review of unclaimed property claims to determine if the claim is approved, denied, needs additional information from the claimant, or needs to be escalated for fraud review.

Examples of Duties

  • Determine the type of claim documentation required for the return of property, as well as authenticity of documents and verification of ownership through an evidentiary process
  • Utilize fraud training to identify claims that may be fraudulent and escalate those for further review
  • Utilize Accurint/IDI Core along with other databases to verify validity of a claim to determine ownership
  • Exhaust all possible options to obtain needed information before requesting additional documents from claimants
  • Review claims for any discrepancies on the claim form or supporting documentation
  • Approve or deny claims by applying relevant state and federal laws, regulations, rules, and internal policies, procedures, and controls
  • Consult with Senior Claim Analyst or Supervisor on more complex claims and/or large dollar claims
  • Create thorough and precise electronic and written records in Unclaimed Property database
  • Advise, guide, and assist claimants via in-person, phone, and written business correspondence
  • Work in rotation with other Claim Analysts on specific and shared tasks
  • Represent UPD at outreach events
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above

Typical Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Associate degree preferred or equivalent job-related experience
  • A high level of critical thinking to make decisions and solve problems
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to ensuring the accuracy and completeness of reports and data.
  • Ability to convey unclaimed property related terminology and information in layman's terms
  • Possess analytical thinking skills and work independently
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple demands under pressure
  • Meeting deadlines while collaborating effectively within a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills by effectively communicating complex information.

  • Quickly pivot attention when new priorities develop
  • Knowledge of Indiana Unclaimed Property statute and reporting requirements
  • Fluency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook, is essential.
