Responsibilities Supervision & Leadership • Supervise, assign, and evaluate custodial staff, sweepers, and seasonal employees • Train staff in cleaning procedures, equipment use, and safety protocols, including hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens • Develop and manage custodial schedules and task assignments • Assist in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation of custodial personnel Facility Cleaning & Maintenance • Oversee and participate in cleaning activities including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, floor care, restroom sanitation, and waste removal • Ensure proper care and maintenance of floors, surfaces, and fixtures • Inspect facilities regularly and address maintenance needs • Perform minor repairs in plumbing, electrical, and carpentry areas and coordinate major repairs with the Maintenance Department • Maintain and service custodial equipment and building systems Grounds & Exterior Maintenance • Supervise and assist with grounds upkeep including mowing, trimming, watering, snow removal, and litter control • Maintain irrigation systems and outdoor equipment • Ensure safe and clean exterior environments throughout the year Building Systems & Safety • Monitor and maintain heating, ventilation, and boiler systems • Ability to troubleshoot building operational issues and coordinate appropriate corrective action • Monitor and assist in maintaining complex building systems and high-use facilities • Communicate effectively with administration, maintenance personnel, staff, and community users regarding facility needs and operational concerns • Conduct routine safety inspections and risk management checks • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, chemical labeling requirements, and environmental standards • Coordinate correction of safety hazards and assist with hazardous material handling Operations & Logistics • Coordinate facility setup for school and community events including chairs, tables, and equipment • Schedule and oversee custodial support for extracurricular and after-hours activities • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and order and distribute materials as needed • Track facility usage and support billing for community use when applicable • Maintain records such as locker assignments, maintenance logs, and temperature logs as applicable Security & Building Access • Open, secure, and monitor school buildings • Conduct security checks and respond to unauthorized access • Serve as an on-call contact for facility access and emergencies • Provide supervision during after-hours activities Additional Responsibilities - High School Assignment • Oversee maintenance and preparation of athletic facilities including fields, courts, and equipment • Maintain gym floors including cleaning, refinishing, and game-line upkeep • Support large-scale events such as assemblies, graduations, and community activities • Coordinate custodial services for evening and weekend events with high facility usage • Assist with setup, teardown, and logistics for athletic competitions and extracurricular programs • Monitor and maintain specialized equipment such as scoreboards, bleachers, and athletic systems
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent • Valid driver's license • Ability to pass a background check Preferred Qualifications • Two to three years of custodial or facilities maintenance experience; lead or supervisory experience preferred • Experience in a school or institutional setting preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation standards, and facility maintenance practices • Basic skills in plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs • Understanding of safety procedures, chemical handling, and risk management practices • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities • Ability to work independently and supervise others effectively Physical Requirements • Ability to perform physical labor including lifting, bending, climbing, and extended standing • Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment safely • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions Additional Skills & Abilities - High School • Ability to manage complex facility usage schedules and multiple concurrent events • Knowledge of athletic facility maintenance and event support operations • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond effectively to operational and facility-related issues • Working knowledge of building maintenance systems, preventive maintenance practices, and facility operations Description

This position provides leadership to custodial staff, ensures a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment, and coordinates facility operations for daily school functions, extracurricular activities, athletic events, and community use.
The Head Custodian oversees custodial schedules, monitors building systems and facility conditions, assists in maintaining complex building operations, and communicates facility needs and operational concerns with administration, maintenance personnel, staff, and community users. The position requires the ability to troubleshoot building operational issues, respond effectively to facility-related concerns, and coordinate appropriate corrective action as needed.
As the lead custodial employee for the building, the High School Head Custodian supports the unique operational demands of a high school environment, including athletic facilities, large-scale events, high-volume building usage, and after-hours activities, while promoting safety, professionalism, and effective teamwork throughout the school community.
