PIT Trainer & Compliance Coordinator

The Master PIT Trainer & Compliance Coordinator contributes to meeting Langham goals of exceptional safety, quality, and operational excellence by owning the powered industrial truck (PIT) training and certification program across all Indianapolis-area campus facilities. This role ensures every hourly associate operating a PIT — including Turret/TSP, Order Picker, Reach Truck, and Sit-Down equipment — is trained, evaluated, and certified in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 before operating equipment unsupervised.

This position delivers both classroom (theory) and hands-on (practical evaluation) training, manages the full administrative lifecycle of certifications — tracking expirations, scheduling recertification, and maintaining audit-ready records — and investigates PIT-related safety incidents to determine root cause and corrective retraining needs. The role requires regular travel between facilities across the greater Indianapolis area to deliver training, audit local practices, and support certification needs on-site.

The Trainer partners closely with Operations Managers, Supervisors, and Safety leadership campus-wide to align training schedules with production needs, and serves as the site's subject-matter expert during OSHA inspections, internal audits, and client compliance walk-throughs. A working mechanical aptitude is beneficial, allowing the Trainer to identify basic equipment issues and coordinate minor repairs during training and floor observations.

Key Outcomes Expected: 

The Master PIT Trainer is expected to:

• Deliver classroom and hands-on PIT training in an efficient, safe, and compliant manner.
• Certify associates on all applicable equipment types before independent operation.
• Maintain full OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 compliance across all campus facilities.
• Keep certification records accurate, current, and audit-ready campus-wide.

• Conduct new-hire certification, triennial refresher training, and equipment-specific certifications as associates cross-train onto new machine types.
• Perform on-floor observation and evaluation of operators, providing hands-on coaching and formal sign-off documentation.
• Travel to each Indianapolis-area facility on a recurring schedule to deliver training, audit local practices, and support certification needs on-site.
• Proactively manage expiration timelines and schedule recertification before lapses occur; flag decertified/expired operators to site leadership immediately.
• Investigate and document PIT-related safety incidents and near-misses; determine root cause and administer corrective retraining.
• Serve as the site's subject-matter expert and point of contact during OSHA inspections, internal audits, or client compliance walk-throughs.
• Maintain and continuously update written training curriculum, evaluation checklists, and equipment-specific SOPs.
• Perform routine pre-operation inspection training and reinforce daily checklist discipline across all equipment types.
• Apply working mechanical knowledge to identify basic equipment issues (battery/charging, hydraulic leaks, tire/wheel wear, mast or fork misalignment) and coordinate minor repairs or escalate to fleet maintenance/vendor as needed.
• Partner with Operations Managers and Supervisors campus-wide to align training schedules with production needs and labor availability.
• Report compliance status, training completion rates, and incident trends to the Senior leadership and Safety leadership on a recurring cadence.
• Support onboarding for new facilities or new clients coming into the multi-client network, standing up PIT training infrastructure from day one.

• Works well in a team environment and partners effectively with Operations, Safety, and HR leadership.
• Demonstrates basic supervisory abilities of coaching and training.
• Demonstrates basic computer skills, including QMS and PIT Fleet Management Systems.
• Proficient in operating all forms of forklift equipment, including narrow-aisle Turret/TSP.
• Basic mechanical/technical aptitude to identify and address minor equipment issues.

Education and Experience: 

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree or technical certification in safety, logistics, or industrial maintenance preferred.
• 3+ years of experience operating powered industrial trucks in a distribution/warehouse environment.
• Prior experience as a certified PIT trainer/train-the-trainer, or demonstrated readiness to obtain trainer certification within 90 days of hire.
• Must be able to pass forklift certification training on all applicable equipment classes.
• Experience supporting a multi-client or 3PL environment preferred.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Must be able to operate a variety of equipment: Turret/TSP, Order Picker, Reach Truck, Sit-Down forklift, and Electric Pallet Jack. Physical movements including bending, stooping, climbing (mounting/dismounting equipment, working at heights on order pickers), and lifting up to 50 pounds as part of daily work routine. Must be able to operate computer equipment and mobile/tablet-based tracking tools. Must be able to travel by personal vehicle between greater-Indianapolis facilities on a recurring, sometimes daily, basis. Work is performed across multiple warehouse environments subject to temperature variances. Regular travel between greater-Indianapolis facilities; schedule may shift day to day based on site training needs.
