Physician - Hematology-Oncology (Recruitment/Relocation & EDRP Authorized)

Summary

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S., or
  • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S., with duties related to the position.
• Residents currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited program who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, are appointed on an intermittent basis, are not considered independent practitioners, and operate under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical and mental ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Physical functions such as vision, color vision, hearing, or speech may be required based on essential duties.

Duties

This position is within the Specialty Care Service Line at the Augusta Veterans Health Care System and reports directly to the Chief of Medicine.

• Provide consultation services and follow‑up for medical subspecialty patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Establish professional relationships with clinicians and staff across the facility and Community‑Based Outpatient Clinics.
• In the role of Hematologist/Oncologist: Provide comprehensive care, including diagnosis, treatment, follow‑up, and patient education for oncology patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings; ensure accurate documentation and coding; evaluate, triage, and prioritize oncology consult requests; conduct telemedicine visits; perform administrative tasks such as peer reviews, compensation and pension evaluations, and ongoing practice evaluations; coordinate care with VA or non‑VA referral centers as needed.
• Attend staff meetings and serve on committees, process improvement teams, and workgroups as requested.
• Maintain competency through Continuing Medical Education (CME) and complete mandatory VA trainings (HIPAA, Privacy, Security, etc.) in a timely manner.
• Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑4:30 pm (subject to change based on agency needs).
