Job Title: Transportation Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a Transportation Engineer to join a growing transportation team and support the design and production of roadway, trail, streetscape, and multimodal transportation projects for state, municipal, county, and local public agency clients. In this hybrid role, you will prepare transportation construction plans, perform engineering calculations, and utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley OpenRoads Designer to deliver high-quality plan sets that comply with Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and local standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed design plans and construction documents for roadway, trail, streetscape, and transportation improvement projects.
• Assist with geometric design, including development of horizontal and vertical alignments, profiles, corridors, cross sections, and grading.
• Develop plan sheets such as typical sections, plan and profile sheets, cross sections, maintenance of traffic plans, signing and pavement marking plans, and traffic control details.
• Perform engineering calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimating to support project design and delivery.
• Support preparation of ODOT and municipal plan sets from preliminary design through final construction documents.
• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, survey staff, and other design disciplines to ensure cohesive and accurate project deliverables.
• Review design plans for compliance with ODOT standards, local agency requirements, and industry best practices.
• Participate in field reviews, site visits, and project coordination meetings as needed to validate designs and address project issues.
• Assist in responding to client comments, incorporating plan revisions, and updating construction documents accordingly.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• 1–5 years of experience in transportation engineering and design for ODOT or municipal projects, including roadway, highway, trail, sidewalk, and roundabout projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley OpenRoads Designer for transportation design and plan production.
• Understanding of roadway design principles and transportation plan production processes.
• Familiarity with ODOT standards, specifications, and plan preparation requirements.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and project deadlines.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with roadway design, transportation engineering, and related civil engineering disciplines.
• Experience using Bentley OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and OpenRoads for plan development.
• Experience preparing plan sets for ODOT and municipal transportation projects.
• Interest in working on a variety of project types, including multimodal and streetscape improvements.
• Ability to adapt to different project types based on skill set and professional interests.

Work Environment

This position offers a hybrid work schedule, with 2–3 days per week in the office and the remaining time working remotely. Candidates may sit near any office location in Ohio, including Columbus, Cleveland, or Akron. You will work on a large variety of transportation projects and benefit from a strong project backlog, with efforts aligned as much as possible to your skills and areas of interest. This is a Permanent position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $100000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
