We are looking for someone to lead our EH&S work who will play a pivotal role in ensuring employee safety, compliance, and environmental stewardship. By integrating safety protocols, conducting risk assessments, and fostering a culture of safety, they help Science minimize hazards, prevent incidents, and promote sustainable operations while developing innovative technologies. Role responsibilities: Ensure ongoing compliance with federal, state (Cal/OSHA), and local regulations; serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and manage all EHS permits and reporting obligations. Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective/preventive action planning; track metrics and report safety performance to senior leadership. Develop and deliver EHS training programs for new hire onboarding and ongoing employee education, including chemical hygiene, emergency response, and waste handling. Manage hazardous waste disposal processes and maintain accurate chemical inventory systems in compliance with RCRA, DOT, and local CUPA requirements. Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments across laboratory and office spaces; partner with facilities to ensure infrastructure meets safety standards. Lead the company's Safety Committee and act as a strategic advisor to leadership on EHS risks, capital investments, and program priorities as the organization scales. Key qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related field. 5+ years of EHS experience in a life sciences, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology environment, with demonstrated ownership of a full safety program. Deep working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations, EPA and DTSC requirements, and biological/chemical safety standards applicable to R&D laboratory settings. Hands‑on experience managing BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratory programs, including biosafety cabinet certification, PPE protocols, and pathogen handling procedures. Strong track record developing and delivering EHS training; ability to communicate technical requirements clearly to diverse audiences including scientists and executives. Proven ability to manage multiple workstreams independently in a fast‑paced, resource‑constrained startup environment. Preferred qualifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) designation strongly preferred. Experience standing up EHS programs at an early‑stage company — from writing the first SOP to building out a full management system. Familiarity with radioactive materials licensing and radiation safety officer responsibilities under NRC or Agreement State (CDPH) frameworks. Experience with ISO 45001 or similar occupational health and safety management system standards. Familiarity with Bay Area‑specific environmental compliance (BAAQMD, local CUPA requirements, SF/Peninsula hazmat regulations). Experience supporting facility build‑outs, lab expansions, or site moves from an EHS planning perspective. Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full‑time position is $130,000- $185,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
