Watch Mate

The Watch Mate stands bridge watch and is responsible for safe and efficient navigation of the vessel. They are responsible for various ship's logs & charts. They perform additional duties specific to the vessel and as assigned by the Master. Employees may be required to work non-regular workdays and shifts, as well as work and travel out of the area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs duties and responsibilities, as outlined in the hopper Safety Management System, including all procedures listed for the position in SMS 6.3-1 Positions and procedures cross reference. Must be familiar with SMS and follow procedures.

Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch (OICNW): Responsible for safe and efficient navigation of the vessel and good seamanship. Plans and conducts passage and determines position. Maintains a safe navigational watch and maneuvers the ship. Follows the Captain's standing orders. Observes nautical rules of the road and best marine practices related to ship handling, tides and currents.

Monitors maritime safety navigation equipment, information and communication equipment including: navigational and weather and responds to emergencies and distress signals at sea.

Keeps and maintains logs, records and other bridge publications current.

Complies with company operating policies and procedures and with all applicable legislation, statutory rules, regulations, codes, guidance notes, and local rules.

Follows the Preventive Maintenance and Inspection program: inspects firefighting, lifesaving, emergency, safety equipment and reports on damage.

Ensures compliance with pollution-prevention requirements. Applies precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment.

Operates life-saving and emergency equipment. Performs duties required on the Emergency Station Bill for drills and actual emergencies. Assists training crew in emergency drill procedures. May be assigned the duties of medical officer and must be able to provide medical first aid.

Ensures compliance with Manson's Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct. Maintains a high standard of ethical behavior, encourages ethical behavior in others, supports ethical decisions and actively seeks appropriate resolution to potential ethical conflicts.

Responsible for practicing safe work standards and promoting an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) work environment as a condition of employment. Supervises unlicensed deck personnel (deck ratings) during docking/undocking evolutions and when leading a team performing specific tasks, (e.g. during shipyard periods).

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities desired in candidates.

• Possesses a US Coast Guard License for unlimited Mat of seagoing vessels, as well as other credentials per STCW Chapter II, Section A-II/1, SMS 6.2 Vessel manning and SMS 6.2-1 Crew credentials checklist
• Licensed Mate and Third Mate must hold Third Mate Unlimited USCG license or higher
• Working knowledge of MS Suite

Employee must be able to meet the following physical requirements for this position such as: Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on marine vessels in water. Able to safely execute duties in and around heavy equipment/large machinery in marine dredging and marine construction job sites. Able to wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) required of various construction work environments (hard hats, personal floatation devices, safety glasses, respirators, etc.)
