Registered Nurse (RN II) Neurology

The Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, educates patients, and maintains medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care effectively and efficiently for patients with varied and complex needs, communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health‑care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care, and acts as a patient and family advocate to monitor and uphold patient rights. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Qualifications Education: Graduate of a program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section. Experience: Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing _PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency). BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months. Preferred: Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers, using a customer service focus and positive language principles. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and roles. Independent judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients and their families. Critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time‑management skills. Professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Outlook. Responsibilities People Essential Functions Use therapeutic communication—including active listening and teaching—to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health‑care team and collaborate on the plan of care. Contribute to teamwork by awareness of overall unit acuity, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for assistance. Collaborate to foster healthy relationships in the work environment, seek guidance, provide guidance, and apply feedback to improve patient outcomes. Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coach and mentor other staff and students, including preceptorship. Use peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve department scores for turnover, retention, and employee engagement on the unit‑based scorecard. Service Essential Functions Follow patient‑ and family‑centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, and maintain medical records in a culturally diverse and inclusive manner. Develop, update, and communicate the plan of care, including discharge plans, in partnership with the patient, family, and the interprofessional health‑care team, using the nursing process. Prioritize care based on the patient’s needs, abilities, and preferences. Advocate on behalf of the patient/family to resolve clinical and ethical concerns using appropriate resources. Provide patient teaching based on learning needs, use appropriate resources, and plan for care after discharge. Consistently evaluate the patient’s comprehension and adapt teaching methods accordingly. Help drive improvement of department scores for patient satisfaction on the unit‑based scorecard through peer‑to‑peer accountability to service standards. Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care with the interprofessional team based on the patient’s condition, supported by accurate documentation. Use clinical judgment and evidence‑based analytic approaches. Improve quality and safety scores on the unit‑based scorecard through peer‑to‑peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration with the interprofessional health‑care team. Finance Essential Functions Demonstrate self‑motivation to independently manage time effectively, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks. Provide input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs. Contribute to meeting department financial targets on the unit‑based scorecard by decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and other areas defined by department specifications. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identify and present areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence‑based practice literature. Offer innovative solutions through evidence‑based practice/performance improvement projects and shared governance activities. Champion new care pathways or service line implementations to improve service to the community. Identify trends for improvement opportunities or practice changes, support initiatives, research changes, and present options to shared governance and leadership.
