Description This position is 0.4 Lead Nurse and 0.6 Registered Nurse. The 0.6 RN portion of this position will be based at Kitsap Lake for the 2026-2027 school year. Position is 8 hours/day for 190 days/year. Bremerton School District JOB DESCRIPTION - LEAD NURSE GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Lead Nurse provides districtwide leadership, coordination, and support for Bremerton School District Health Services. They serve in this role while continuing to provide direct nursing services to students through a building-based assignment determined annually by the District based on student health needs, staffing configurations, and operational priorities. The Lead Nurse serves as the District's primary nursing leader, promoting consistent, equitable, and high-quality health services across all schools; supporting nursing staff and health room assistants; ensuring compliance with district, state, and federal requirements; and serving as a liaison among schools, families, healthcare providers, public health agencies, and community partners. This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning or designee and does not include supervisory authority or authorization to evaluate, discipline, or supervise bargaining unit employees. Reports to and evaluated by: Building Principal or Designee ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide districtwide leadership and support to promote consistent health services practices, procedures, and student care across all schools.
- Facilitate communication, collaboration, and professional learning among nursing staff and health room assistants.
- Coordinate and support district health services functions, including state-required screenings, medication practices, emergency care planning, staff training, and nursing coverage as needed.
- Maintain district health forms, procedures, protocols, and resources to support efficient and compliant health services operations.
- Support required health data collection, reporting, record management, and compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
- Serve as a liaison among schools, families, healthcare providers, public health agencies, and community organizations to support student health needs.
- Provide consultation and technical assistance regarding complex student health needs and emerging health issues.
- Perform direct nursing services and all duties associated with the Registered Nurse position at an assigned school site.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning or designee.
- Current unrestricted Washington State Registered Nurse license.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Successful completion of Washington State fingerprint requirements.
- Knowledge of student healthcare laws, regulations, and school health practices.
- Strong organizational, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners.
- Proficiency with electronic health records, student information systems, and standard office technology.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Minimum three (3) years of school nursing experience.
- Experience in public health, pediatric nursing, community health, or school health services.
- Demonstrated leadership, training, or project coordination experience.
- Knowledge of Washington State school health requirements and reporting systems.
- Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children
- Provides health assessments: Obtains a health history; Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision and hearing; Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment; and/or Identifies abnormal health findings
- Develops and implements a student health plan (ICHP/IHP)
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
- Plans and implements school health management protocols
- Participates in home visits assessing the family needs as related to the child's health
- Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
- Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school health practices
- Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district
- Where applicable, participates in the IEP plan development
- Works directly with other professional health care providers to administer health care procedures in accordance with health care needs for each student under the direction of written physician orders
- Distribute medications and maintain medication records for individual students
- Audit and organize student health care at multiple school sites
- Train school staff w/direct student contact in individual student health care needs
- Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and holds an unrestricted license
- Certified in CPR or BLS (or obtain in the first 30 days)
- Possess a valid WA State driver's license
- Must pass WA State fingerprint requirements
- Knowledge of specialized medical equipment (feeding tubes, pumps, etc.)
- B.S.N. or Registered Nurse with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health or pediatric nursing
- Previous experience as a nurse in the school setting preferred
- Principles and practices underlying professional nursing
- Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health
- Current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
- Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies
- State and local laws relating to health and social issues
- Rules and regulations regarding being a school health technician in the State of WA
- Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing
- Exercise professional judgment in making decisions
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, etc.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
- Organize and manage time
- Be a self-starter or self-motivated
- Ability to work independently but also as part of the school health care team
- Use a computer and various software applications
