Veterinary Technician - OphthalmologyMount Laurel Animal Hospital is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and detail-oriented Veterinary Technician to join our Ophthalmology team. This role is ideal for a technician who enjoys combining advanced technical skills with highly specialized patient care and wants the opportunity to continue learning and growing within veterinary ophthalmology. Our team manages a diverse caseload ranging from outpatient eye examinations and diagnostic testing to advanced surgical procedures. As the service continues to grow, we are looking for a technician who can work efficiently, stay organized, anticipate the needs of the doctor and patients, and confidently manage anesthesia cases.This role provides technical and nursing support for patients undergoing advanced diagnostics, procedures, treatments, and ongoing case management within the Ophthalmology service. This role works closely with internists, fellow technicians, assistants, and client service teams to ensure safe patient handling, accurate treatment delivery, thorough documentation, and excellent continuity of care. This individual will thrive in a specialty environment that requires critical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to balance hands-on patient care with detailed coordination and communication.A typical day may include assisting with ophthalmic examinations and diagnostics, prepare patients for procedures, manage hospitalized or surgical patients, coordinate workflow with the Ophthalmologist, and provide anesthesia from induction through recovery. No two days are exactly the same, and this role requires someone who is comfortable balancing efficiency, attention to detail, technical skill, and excellent patient care. Throughout the day, you will help manage medically complex patients while serving as a knowledgeable and compassionate resource for both the clinical team and the families who trust us with their pets' care.This role is ideal for a technician who values meaningful client connection, thrives on organization and clinical detail, and takes pride in helping patients receive thoughtful, high-quality care during some of their most important visits.Key Responsibilities:Assist the Ophthalmologist with examinations, treatments, procedures, and surgical casesPerform and assist with ophthalmic diagnostics such as Schirmer tear testing, fluorescein staining, tonometry, and other specialized testingPrepare patients, surgical areas, equipment, and supplies for ophthalmic proceduresSafely calculate and administer medications under veterinary directionPlace and maintain IV cathetersPerform endotracheal intubation and assist with anesthetic inductionIndependently monitor anesthesia using ECG, blood pressure, ETCO?, SpO?, temperature, and other appropriate parametersRecognize anesthetic complications and appropriately communicate or intervene when patient status changesManage patient recovery and provide appropriate post-operative nursing careMaintain complete and accurate anesthesia and medical recordsProperly operate and troubleshoot anesthesia machines, monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, and related equipmentProvide clear client communication and patient discharge instructionsMaintain organized treatment, procedure, and surgical spacesWork closely with doctors, technicians, assistants, and other specialty departments to maintain an efficient daily workflowHelp support a growing Ophthalmology caseload while maintaining high standards for patient safety and quality of careQualifications:Veterinary technician experience (2+ years preferred)Strong anesthesia experience and the ability to independently manage anesthetized patientsStrong knowledge of anesthetic monitoring, patient recovery, and recognizing changes in patient statusConfidence with medication calculations, IV catheter placement, intubation, and perioperative patient careExcellent attention to detailStrong organizational and time-management skillsThe ability to maintain efficiency during a busy specialty caseloadStrong communication and teamwork skillsA willingness to learn specialized ophthalmic procedures and diagnosticsA professional, dependable, and patient-focused approachBenefits:Competitive compensationMedical, dental, and vision insurance401(k) with employer matchingContinuing education (CE) allowanceGenerous PTO policyCareer advancement pathways and mentorship opportunitiesSupportive and inclusive work cultureAccess to state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technologiesAdditional Perks:On-site events and staff appreciation activities throughout the yearFully equipped staff kitchens with complimentary snacks and beveragesRelaxed break areas to recharge during your shiftOn-site CE opportunities and educational workshopsEmployee pet care discountsExpectations of Conduct:All of our staff is expected to demonstrate professionalism, dependability, and accountability in all aspects of the role.
