Summary Position eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. About the Location The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, TX is a DNV‑certified Comprehensive Stroke Center serving more than 151,000 Veterans. The center offers 24/7 access to acute stroke treatment, advanced imaging, thrombolysis, thrombectomy, and supports stroke education through residency and fellowship programs associated with Baylor College of Medicine. Duties Assess patient and family needs and plan interventions for adults. Provide stroke‑subsidiary and general neurological care. Perform initial histories and physical examinations. Order and interpret diagnostic studies including laboratory tests, CT, MRI, PET, EEG, EMG, and other electrodiagnostic tests. Perform and supervise lumbar punctures as needed. Administer neuro‑cognitive scales such as MMSE/MOCA, NPI, and GDS. Collaborate with medical and health‑care professionals to achieve optimal patient health. Exercise medical decision‑making and provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for complex patients. Lead initiatives to improve patient care programs based on research and study findings. Engage in direct patient care, family teaching, staff education, and multidisciplinary consultations. Participate in education of PA students, NPs, fellows, residents, and medical students. Demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and treating severely ill, multi‑symptomatic patients. Act as a resource for health‑care standards development and quality improvement. Initiate and expedite consultation requests and schedule special tests and studies. Provide patient and family education, counseling, and medication guidance; perform additional duties as assigned. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign medical school (meeting ECFMG eligibility for foreign graduates). Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or DC. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to eligibility for board certification. Accepted residencies include: ACGME or AOA accredited programs (core specialty leading to board certification). One year of approved post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S., with fellowship work acceptable. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience Demonstrated expertise in managing complex neurological disorders, particularly stroke care and neurocritical medicine. Completion of a formal ACGME‑accredited stroke fellowship is highly desirable. Prior experience in academic teaching, clinical research, and quality improvement initiatives is valued. Familiarity with Comprehensive Stroke Center accreditation requirements and a record of successful interdisciplinary collaboration are preferred.
