The student assistant will assist in the contract administration of transportation improvement projects, gaining experience in a professional environment. The role combines field and office work and may involve interfacing with other personnel within District 7 Construction Division. Conditions of Employment This is a part‑time, temporary, non‑benefited student position. Employment is at‑will and can be terminated by either party at any time. Candidates must pass required pre‑employment checks. Employees must live and work in California. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university from the affiliated list. Students must be enrolled in at least six semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduates; four semester units or six quarter units for graduates. Work Schedule Flexible workdays and hours, Monday–Friday, between 8 AM–5 PM. Final schedule determined by supervisor. Student assistants typically work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks (winter, spring, summer). Compensation $18.28 – $28.16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Complete each term with the minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate classifications. Proof collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Proficient in using personal computers/laptops, scanners, copiers, and data entry into computer systems. Clear verbal and written communication skills. Follow written and verbal instructions and maintain cooperative relations with workplace contacts. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies give preference to applicants (up to 26 years old) who are or have been a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities Assist Construction Engineer and Resident Engineers in ensuring contractor compliance with all contract documents and requirements. Tasks include jobsite inspections, accurate documentation, quantity calculations, verification of material sources and qualities, and timely communication of progress and problems. Learn to read and understand contract special provisions, project plans, standard plans, and specifications. Assist in field inspections, prepare daily reports of contractor activities, conduct labor compliance interviews, and support preparation of monthly progress pay estimates. Process, file, and maintain complete and accurate project records, including monthly progress pay estimates, work reports, contract change orders, labor and equipment records, correspondence, and personnel records. Maintain records in the States Electronic Filing system Falcon. Assist in preparation of contract change orders, RFI responses, project photographs, attend tailgate safety meetings, and other general duties related to construction contract administration. Physical Requirements Ability to sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; and use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners. Working Conditions Work performed in a hybrid environment. No travelling or driving involved. Employees may work from home per supervisor discretion, with the possibility of unilateral termination of the work‑from‑home option.
