Abiding Presence Lutheran Church (ELCA) is seeking a full-time Minister of Music to lead and grow a vibrant, worship-centered music ministry. This position offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with pastors, staff, and dedicated volunteers to enrich congregational worship through organ, choral, handbell, and instrumental music while nurturing musicians of all ages and abilities. Position Summary The Minister of Music is responsible for planning, preparing, and coordinating the congregation’s music ministry in support of the mission and worship life of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church. The successful candidate will demonstrate artistic excellence, strong organizational and leadership skills, and a commitment to fostering participation in music as an expression of faith, service, and community. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Senior Pastor. Primary Responsibilities Worship Leadership Serve as principal organist for all regular weekend worship services, seasonal services, festivals, and funerals. Collaborate with pastors and staff to plan worship, selecting hymns, service music, preludes, postludes, and choral repertoire appropriate to the liturgical year. Recruit, train, and support cantors and other worship musicians. Coordinate special music and guest musicians for worship and special events. Choral and Instrumental Music Direct the Sanctuary Choir and the Bells of Praise Handbell Choir. Select and prepare music that reflects the lectionary and church seasons. Recruit, supervise, and encourage volunteer directors for additional ensembles, including: Cherub Choir Chapel Choir/Chimers Youth Handbells Noteworthy Women’s Chorus Men’s Chorus Instrumental Ensemble Worship Band Additional ensembles as opportunities arise Utilize vocal soloists and instrumentalists to enrich worship. Music Ministry Administration Supervise the Music Associate. Coordinate the annual music calendar and rehearsal schedules. Maintain the music library and oversee volunteers. Ensure compliance with music licensing and copyright requirements. Manage the music budget responsibly. Coordinate instrument maintenance and tuning. Participate in Worship, Art & Music Ministry Action Team meetings, Executive Council meetings, worship planning, and staff collaboration. Community Engagement Support music for Vacation Bible School, the church day school, and Summer Music Camp. Foster relationships with local music organizations, including River City Ringers and the San Antonio Chamber Choir. Qualifications Master’s degree in Music or equivalent education and experience. Outstanding proficiency in both organ and piano performance. Experience planning and leading liturgical worship. Strong choral conducting skills with singers of varied ages and abilities. Knowledge of vocal technique, rehearsal methods, and music interpretation. Excellent leadership, teaching, organizational, and interpersonal skills. An appreciation for and understanding of the theology and worship practices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Compensation & Benefits Salary: $50,000–$65,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package. Reimbursement for approved professional membership dues. Continuing education support, including up to two weeks (including two weekends) annually with funding available. Wedding services compensated according to church policy. Funeral services are considered part of the position responsibilities.
