Summary: As an employee of Maryland Masonic Homes, this position shall be committed to working in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of the Maryland Masonic Homes. In addition, this position shall be committed to providing “Meaningful Living” for its residents and their families. Overview: Provide direct oversight of staff on Healthcare to ensure continuity of care. This position reports to the Director of Nursing or designee.
Schedule: 7:00am-3:30pm
Week1: Sunday
Week2: Saturday
Candidates must hold an active CPR and First Aid certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or an AHA-approved training provider.
Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities:
• Assists with direct day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants, certified medicine
aides, medication techs in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that
govern the long term care facility
• Cooperates with other resident services to ensure that the resident’s total regimen of
care is maintained.
• Assesses and ensures that all GNA’s are following their respective job descriptions.
• Performs administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations,
disciplinary tools, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
• Participates in the development, maintenance and implementation of the facility’s Quality
Improvement program for the Nursing Department.
• Participates in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
• Makes written and oral reports/recommendations concerning the activities of your shift
as required to your supervisor.

• Periodically reviews the department’s policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.,
makes recommendations for revisions to the supervisor.
• Meets with nursing staff as well as support personnel, in planning the shifts services,
programs, and activities.
• Admits, transfers, and discharges residents as required, in accordance with policy.
• Fills out and completes accident/incident reports, per policy.
• Completes 24 hour report daily per established procedures.
• Charts all accidents/incidents involving the residents and follows established
procedures.
• Educates resident/family to promote compliance to treatment plan.
• Interacts with attending physicians in reviewing treatment plans, records and signs their
orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.
• Charts nurses’ notes in a n informative, compete and descriptive manner that reflects
resident status, the care provide to the resident, the resident’s response to the care per
policy.
• Monitors resident fluid balance per policy.
• Completes required record keeping forms/charts upon the resident’s admission, transfer,
and/or discharge.
• Records and processes new/changed diet orders per protocol.
• Transcribes physician’s orders per facility protocol.
• Reports all discrepancies noted concerning physician’s orders, diet change, charting
error, etc., to the Supervisor.
• Performs routine charting duties as required and in accordance with established
Charting and Documentation Policies and Procedures.
• Signs and dates all entries made in the resident’s medical record.
• Prepares and administers medications as ordered by the physician, per policy.
• Completes monthly turnover process per policy and as assigned by supervisor.
• Orders prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary, and in
accordance with our established policies.
• Ensures that an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment
are on hand to meet the needs of the residents.
• Completes the narcotic records and necessary documentation as required by regulation
and policy.
• Disposes of drugs and narcotics as required, and in accordance with established
procedures.
• Reviews medications kardex for completeness of information, accuracy in the
transcription of the physician’s order, and adherence to stop order policies.
• Notifies the Supervisor of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift.
• Informs the Supervisor of staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work.
• Assists in development of work assignments, and/or assist in completing and performing
such tasks.
• Makes several rounds of the Nursing unit per shift.
• Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by subordinates. Makes appropriate
reports to the supervisor as required or as may be necessary.
• Develops and maintains a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as
well as other departments within the facility to assure that Nursing services and activities
can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
• Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive
emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
• Meets with shift’s nursing personnel, on a regularly schedule basis, to assist in
identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
• Reviews and evaluates the performance of subordinates as directed and makes
recommendations to the supervisor.
• Gives/receives the nursing report upon reporting in and ending shift duty hours.
• Makes rounds with physicians as necessary.
• Implements and maintains established nursing objectives and standards.
• Makes periodic checks to evaluate the resident’s physical and emotional status.
• Reviews the Maryland Masonic Homes Nursing Policy Procedures Manual as
catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages,
packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, giving massages and range of motion exercises,
care of the dead/dying, etc. as required.
• Reviews MMH Intravenous Policy and Procedure Manual, perform IV therapy per policy.
• Requests and arranges for diagnostic and therapeutic services, as ordered by the
physician and in accordance with established procedures.
• Meets with residents, and/or family members, as necessary. Reports problem areas to
the supervisor.
• Carries out restorative and rehabilitative programs, to include self-help and care.
• Checks foods brought into the facility by the resident’s family/visitors to assure that it is
within the resident’s dietary allowances. Discusses dietary restrictions with family.
Notifies Supervisor of any potential non-compliance.
• Inspects the Nursing treatment areas daily to ensure that they are maintained in a clean
and safe manner.
• Notifies the resident’s attending physician, Supervisor, and Responsible Party when
there is a change in the resident’s condition.
• Works with the facility’s consultants and implement those changes authorized by the
Director of Nursing.
• Monitors seriously ill residents as necessary.
• Notifies physician, Nursing Administration and the Responsible party upon the death of a
resident.
• Participates in the development, planning, and conducting of in-service training classes.
• Participates in the orientation programs for new employees to your shift, its policies and
procedures, and to his/her job position and duties.
• Attends and participates in continuing educational programs to keep abreast of change
in the profession as well as to maintain required licensure.
• Monitors assigned area’s compliance to the facilities safety regulations established for
the use of equipment and supplies.
• Ensures that assigned work areas (i.e., nurses’ stations, medicine, rooms, etc.) are
maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s resident care areas, treatment areas, etc., are maintained
in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s nursing personnel follow established departmental policies
and procedures, including dress codes.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s personnel participate in and conduct all fire safety and
disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner.
• Participates in the development, and maintenance of the infection control program for
monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among the residents and
personnel.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s personnel follow established infection control procedures
when isolation precautions become necessary.
• Participates in the development, and maintenance of the procedures for reporting
hazardous conditions or equipment.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s personnel follow established hand washing techniques in
the administering of nursing care procedures.
• Recommends to the supervisor equipment and supply needs of assigned unit.
• Assures that a stock of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on
assigned unit at all times to adequately meet the needs of the residents.
• Participates in the application of the developed procedures for the safe operation of all
Nursing equipment. Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly.
• Ensures that only trained and authorized personnel operate your unit’s equipment.
• Ensures that all personnel operating Nursing equipment in a safe manner.
• Monitors nursing procedures to ensure that nursing supplies are used in an efficient
manner to avoid waste.
• Ensures that assigned nurses’ notes reflect that the care plan is being
implemented/followed.
• Ensures that assigned unit’s nursing assistants are aware of the resident care plans and
that they are used in administering daily care to the resident.
• Maintains the confidentiality of all resident care information.
• Monitors nursing care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness,
dignity and respect.
• Ensures that all nursing care is provided in privacy and that nursing service personnel
knock before entering the resident’s room.
• Ensures that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of the residents’ rights,
and responsibilities.
• Reviews complaints made by the resident and makes a written/oral report to the
supervisor indicating what action(s) were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance
within 24 hours.
• Completes a written complaint form of the resident’s complaints and/or grievances
indicate the action taken to resolve the compliant and the current status of the complaint
process per protocol.
• Observes standard precautions and ensures that all nursing personnel do also.
• Participates in resident/family meetings as needed.
• Responds to emergencies in all parts of facility (including Grand Lodge) for all residents,
employees and visitors.
• Ensures that weekly and monthly resident weights are obtained and recorded as
scheduled.
• Monitors all treatments and medications ordered by the physician. Assures that all are
still necessary and relevant to the resident’s currents status.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
• Must be a graduate of an accredited LPN/RN school.
• Minimum of one year long term care experience preferred.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Licensed Nurse
in Maryland.
• Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
• Must possess the ability to make nursing decisions when circumstances warrant.
• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members,
visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
• Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as
laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
• Must be willing to learn leadership and supervisory skills and possess the willingness to
work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
• Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the
programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for
providing quality care.
• Must possess current CPR certificate.
• Must possess basic computer knowledge
• 8 hours Dementia Training within 90 days of employment.
• Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the
willingness to handle challenging residents.
• Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate
them into existing nursing procedures.
• Must be able to accurately relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
• Must attend all mandatory in-services.
• Must be able to meet the standards of the MMH MVP Customer Service Program.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
• Must be able to cope with the mental emotional stress of the position.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to
function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
• Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to
work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull and move equipment, supplies, etc. in excess of 50
pounds.
• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.
• Works in office areas as well as throughout the nursing services area (i.e. medication
rooms, nurse’s station, resident rooms, etc.)
• Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours.
• Is subject to frequent interruptions.
• Communicates with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department employees.
• May be subject to mandatory overtime as conditions warrant.
• Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
• Subject to falls, injuries, odors, etc., throughout the work day.
• Subject to exposure to infection waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the AIDS
and Hepatitis B viruses.
• Maintain a liaison with residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately
plan for the residents needs.
• Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at
times, hostile situations within the facility.
